I would get an Over Under shotgun if it were going to be for fun. Skeet shooting is so much fun and quite difficult at times. Singles/double and pumps are more accurate than any auto shotgun because no gas is used to cycle the system.

There is nothing like a classic wooden shotgun, synthetics stocks do have their place!

I had a Mossberg 500 for awhile. I had alot of issues with it regarding the action and feeding. I ended up selling it and hanging onto my Noble double barrel for the time being.

You would be happy with the saiga though...they are alot of fun!

i would get an 870 over a Mossberg. Try to find an older used 870 at a gun shop near you as they are well built and will last forever and feel much more solid than newer ones.

a nice o/u is really expensive. you have to be a pretty die hard upland game guy to drop $1500 on a ruger red label or something like that. pumps are just so cheap.
i've got a semi auto winchester super x that is fun to shoot when its working. nothing like firing off 5 rounds as fast as you can pull the trigger ;-)

I shoot in 3 gun matches and use a FN police tactical. Holds 7+1. Its a great gun but if I had to do it over again I would go with a Benelli like the M4 or even the super 90. Kind of a snob I guess when it comes to firearms. The Saiga is something I have been wanting to get for some time. But I have been busy building other projects. Im going to kick myself in the ass when they are no longer able to be picked up.

As for the OP, check pawn shops. The older 870 police magnums can be found for cheap. Say anywhere from $125 to $200. A few extra $$ and you can rebuild the gun to look as tactical as you ever would want it to look. They run like a champ and I would not mind grabbing one in a SHTF situation. Check Gun Broker as well. Just remember your going to have a transfer fee if you go that route. Expect a $25 or so fee for that. I would choose the 870 over the 500/590 any day. But thats just me!

My mossberg 500 has been a great gun so far. I really don't have any complaints. Honestly either would make a nice gun for you.

Have you ever shot a shotgun? W/ my 28" hunting barrel there isn't much spread at all even w/ 00 Buckshot. The 20" has a little more spread but not a lot. Plus there are those things called slugs

Go for a Benelli Nova. You won't regret it. Tons of gun for the money and a Mossberg can't compare. You can't get one used for $200ish I'm sure, if not less (around here at least). Mine is one of the original ones and I have the recoil reducer in the stock. The newer ones are even more interchangeable.

The Saiga's are so awesome. I need one. I forgot about those.

Well, posterity, you will never know what it cost us to preserve your freedom. I only hope that you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.

I can't imagine when or where. Maybe if you're in a combat situation and your enemy just happens to be a flock of mallards?
Not that I care, of course.
