From what I've seen Mossbergs are really dirt cheap $75-$100 used, or almost the price of new. They don't hold their value well, and are cheap new. Being cheap new it's hard for some to sell the gun at a depreciated price.

I would forego both, and go with an Mossberg 835. I bought one a few years back to Turkey hunt with. It was an excellent gun, not to expensive, shoots 3.5" shells, wasn't too heavy, and held EXCELLENT patterns with a Hastings tube.

That gun held much better patterns than my brothers Benelli Nova.

Mossbergs get a bad rap only because they are cheap. Those guns are about foolproof and NEVER fail.

If your hiking 5 to 10 miles with this gun any weight drop will be beneficial. Also composite materials can be made smaller and stronger than conventional wood. This allowing the overall length to be shorter and still provide strength. This helps in moving though tight areas with more ease. Composites just dont have the classic look but the benefits prevail its wooden counter part.

Mine is one of the original ones and I have the recoil reducer in the stock. The newer ones are even more interchangeable.

The Saiga's are so awesome. I need one. I forgot about those.

        See my post.

Unimpressed. FWIW and for whatever reason it did seem to kick less than the Mossberg 835. But so much of the kick when shooting turkey tubes is in the tube profile. The Mossberg was heavier and still kicked more.

the Benelli Nova gas system is what helps that gun not kick. Its a great design. I cant speak of your Mossberg your talking about....

My gun also has an additional recoil reducer in the stock. Not sure if they offer them anymore? Its basically a mercury filled tube that goes inside the stock. Yes it adds weight, and I've always been curious to shoot it side by side with a normal Nova.

I'm pretty sure Nova's don't cost too much? I know the local pawn/gun shop has quite a few used ones. They even have a marine model and a tactical.

870-870-870-870-870-870- Can not say it enough. I have seen Mossies come aprt after 200 rounds. I can totally strip and rebuild an 870 (trigger assembly and all) in under 2 min parts are available everywhere and I have fired 870's that have had mud ice and all kinds of crap on and in them (not in the barrel) and have never had a hang or miss fire.

I shoot trap and skeet every weekend and I take my god old 870 out there, with a modified choke in it, and shoot as well if not better than the A-holes with the BT-99's and single shot $2,000 good for nothing "sport" guns.

I love my 870, especially with all the Mesa Tactical bits.
