E34's are also the executive saloon cars of their day, they weren't made to be tossed around an auto-x course. Not to say they can't be, but you make them seem like obese pigs. They're heavy in some respects until you realize they seat four very comfortably, have adequate trunk space, and a mild amount of technology/comforts.
I had the pleasure of riding with Ray Korman in his S50 525 E34 at VIR and he tossed it around like an e30M3...

    it's not the car,
    it's the driver,
No Offense to you Trey or the guys post below you, but Ray, even at his age, can outdrive just about anyone...
we past everyone on the track that day and we past them anywhere he wanted to...
like the climbing, blind S's at VIR, actually past 2 cars before we were thru them...
I had a new opinion of the E34 that day and realized that I am not the driver I thought I was...

Fantastic. I'm sure plenty of us here know that Mister Korman is a very experienced driver, but I think we were discussing E34's actually. The car to which you are referring was Ray's track-prepared E34. It had a Korman Stage 1 S50, nearly $8k in suspension work (and easily the firmest E34 I have ever been in,) E34 M5 front brakes, a rebuilt 3.64 LSD with 50% locking, Hoosier track tires, etc. etc.

I'll venture a guess that his car was far, far different than that other guy's in the auto-x sig picture. Sure, it should have impressed you, it should have blown you away, he had craploads invested in that car. The "it's not the car, it's the driver" statement is a beaten horse and is somewhat irrelevant in what we were talking about. Like I said Korman is a very experienced driver, but I imagine you were equally impressed by the E34 that had the tens of thousands sunk into it.

I don't think so...when did a coil over set cost $8K, brake upgrade is typical, track tires do help...
track prepared, maybe maybe not but it was his DD too, it still had comfort seats and AC in it and regular seat belts too...no cage, no lightening of the chassis ect...
it had mods but every other car on that track had mods that day so what is your point???
Yes, we were talking about e34's and the statement that they weren't tossable and I made the point that in the right hands they can be...

your distaste for Korman doesn't change the car or the point I made...

BDK and TDE30: CALM DOWN! It's not a pissing contest. E34's kick ass. End of story. E30's are more nimble though. Take two of these and call me in the morning.

On that note, here is some e34/e30 love for everyone. My M5 and little bro's old e30 in happier times.

They are the shit, maybe that is why (Plus they're cheap and can look hot) My first car was an e28, my current car is an e28, and my last car will be an e28.

I like to think of it as a combination of an e30 and an e34.

4 doors, loots of room, 12 way adjustable electric sport seats, while being tossable and stylish like the e30.

I love my 535is. The added torque and displacement over the 325i give it a drastically different feel under acceleration. For a car with less than 200hp, it just seems to pull and pull, with lots of grunt low down. My 325i may be just as fast when time, but it needs to be revved all the way up.

My 325i is a joy to drive, nice enough for daily commute while still being capable enough to move quickly through the 'twisties'. My 535is, however, brings a smile to my face everytime I get in it.

Do you have an e34 now? IMO, they are worlds apart, with the e34 being much nicer for daily commute, with big plushy seats and comfy suspension. It just doesn't feel as toss-able as the e28, and like the e30, that is what inspires confidence in a car.
My e30 and e28 are both up for sale::

Yup still have an e34 M5. Don't think I will ever get rid of it. I haven't driven many e28's, but I have driven my share of e30's. I must say that while standard e34's are a bit cooshy in their stock form, the M5 is a different car. In my opinion, it's very tossible.

                      Cheers,

Eh, my bad Brad, just realized who you were. I wasn't trying to get into an arguement over E34's. I, personally, love E34's, but I can think of 3987 better auto-x candidates. If I recall correctly, I was defending them in my original post. They can be tossed around a track/course, but there are plenty of better alternatives.

Maybe I misinterpreted your statement, but it seemed like you were trying to make Korman's E34 seem like a normal E34. E34's are capable cars, but damn, his car is built. That suspension I mentioned before was actually two different suspension packages that came with the car. The first consisted of Korman's Roadsport Suspension package (Bilstein Sports, springs, front/rear sways, and bushings) and the second was the "driving school race suspension" setup (front/rear coilovers, custom valved Bilstein struts/shocks, adjustable front camber plates, etc.) The former was nearly $3000, the latter was well over $4000. This is all lifted off of the for sale advert that he gave us when my father was E34 hunting.

I have nothing against Ray. He's a cool guy and his shop has done work on my parent's cars on multiple occasions. Bottom line: his car is built and isn't the best gauge for how the average E34 handles.

Sorry if I came off like a prick.

This place is like catholic school, 2/3 of the students smoke weed on a daily basis, but the faculty seems to convince the outside world that drugs are just in the other schools, the resident pot dealer thinks he's cool because he has the originality to call anyone he doesn't like a homosexual, and most of the little children follow him like sheep, then there's the few with brains, you hardly ever hear from them, perhaps don't even know they exist, but they get all the sh!t done.
