Ignore That fiddle guy - he's an ass.

SO - FUCK ME!!! - you just made my head explode! So what you are getting at is that a car, is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it? Am I getting close?

So when I sell my car, I should only ask for offers, or should I post a price?

What is the cheapest you ever seen an e30 go for? Have you ever gotten one for FREE?

I've paid for cars I shouldn't have paid anything for a free car probably isn't worth what you paid for it.

I've picked several cars up in the $200-500 range, never more for a non running car, and most of the time the seller is elated that I showed up and gave them money, it is a pita to sell a car that doesn't run, most people need to hire a tow truck to move it, and that can cost as much as the purchase price.

Just because you can get a car cheap doesn't make it a good deal, this guy will sell you the car and a transmission for $1200, but unless you have driven the car the transmission came out of you don't know if it really works, so you fix it, buy some other parts, pay to have it towed, lets assume you live close...now you are $1500 and 2 or 3 days of labor into a car that might run and you could sell for around $2000 in this area, or might need even more work, most people will just buy the car that works, and I wonder if this car has DMV back fees

I have piles of spare parts, and the parts that this 535is needs, so it might make a good deal for me, then again I could find other problems as I go and it could wind up costing even more than what it is worth to fix it. I also paid for these parts at some point, so if I fix it to use myself it might work out well for me, but I still take what I paid for these parts into consideration when I compute how much I have into the car, the main advantage here is I don't need to look all over for parts, spend a couple months looking and driving arround, or large ammounts of cash to get them quickly.

A couple people have pointed out what individual parts are worth, but parting a car is time consuming, dealing with potential customers who don't show up or pay, money can be made at parting, but it isn't free money and a car is never worth sum of the value of all the parts.

As far as an asking price, it helps to have one, but if 5 people offer lower than your asking price and they are all in the same ballpark then that is most likely the value, but you must get the car out there where potential buyers can see it to do this, in my previous example if you throw in 2 more bids at $100 and $1500 then the guy at $100 is low balling you and the guy at $1500 is offering too much, sell it to him quick, before he changes his mind!

As far as fixing 20 year old cars to resell... I usually wind up spending as much as the car is worth to make them work properly, if it is for my own use this works because I get to fix it my way and I get the car I want, but it is a terible way to earn money the guy I got my Cabrio from was trying to do this and loosing his shirt, it can be done, just isn't as profitable as it looks on the outside.

My reference to the guy with the $600 e24 wasn't that I was right and he was wrong, but that he made such a huge fuss about what a jerk I was, then got less than I offered. I offered $500 on a 1970 2002 over the summer, it didn't run, and was filled with bondo and rust, he turned me down for an offer of $1000, I have nothing against that, but the buyer probably doesn't know what it will cost to make it right, for $500 it would make a fine run around car, but it would cost several thousand in body panels plus engine work, and a new interior to make it nice when you can buy a similar nice car in good shape for less, the funniest thing I read in car ads is the word "invested"...money spent on a car is just gone.

This place is like catholic school, 2/3 of the students smoke weed on a daily basis, but the faculty seems to convince the outside world that drugs are just in the other schools, the resident pot dealer thinks he's cool because he has the originality to call anyone he doesn't like a homosexual, and most of the little children follow him like sheep, then there's the few with brains, you hardly ever hear from them, perhaps don't even know they exist, but they get all the sh!t done.

That is a little ignorant. E28's (especially 535's) are not junk by any means. The airdam looks to be in good shape... I would venture to say that the car has had some care, and is well worth the $600. If it were closer, it would be mine pending more details.

A Red on black 535is is really rare. I dig it.

                      You want junk? try E39

                          +2. E32's are a close second.

It seems like a great deal though, there is easily $2k in parts there.
