i do not need to do research! one of my good friends has one of these toys. he goes threw a lot of tires. you do not live in sf. i don't know what kind of kids ride fixed bikes in bend but they are all trust fund kids here. ones you have done some driving in sf you will come to hate the kids on these bikes. they might be cool in flat cities but if you have ever been to sf you will know that we have a lot of crazy steep hills!!! non of the kids here build their own bikes ether. they all get custom bikes. before fixed bikes became "cool" bike messengers used them in sf. they made their own bikes, and knew how to ride them. thats when they were cool.Deutschman, try doing some research before you open your mouth when you don't know what you're talking about. Most of the kids that I ride with are pretty damn far from rich. That's one of the beauties of these bikes. They don't take a lot of money to build a nice one.sigpic

Much better response, T. I know it's trendy, and don't care. I have a blast on my bike, that's all that matters.
And I used to live in SF. I know exactly what the terrain is like. Just because there's a bunch of douchebag rich kids on them doesn't mean they're all like that. You're overgenerallizing in the exact same way that people do to us that drive BMW's, saying that we're all assholes. I got into a 45 minute long argument with some fuck from a bike forum that was convinced that because I drove a BMW I didn't deserve to ride a bike and all I do is run over pedestrians and cyclists. You're doing the same thing.Comment

really? all that horrible dead weight...maybe a lb or 2? and if you have a decent frame, ie titanium, aluminum, or carbon fiber, then all that "dead weight" doesn't mean jack-oh and if you ride a road bike everywhere you'll be in decent enough shape to keep that horrible weight from dragging you down.what exactly is sigworthyComment

Just one pound could be as much as 5% however. And how does a road bike get you in better shape than a fixed gear? refer to sheldon's brown's thoughts on coasting and its effect on the muscles. Also ive heard each pound can roughly equate to one beat per minute of the heart under certain circumstances.really? all that horrible dead weight...maybe a lb or 2? and if you have a decent frame, ie titanium, aluminum, or carbon fiber, then all that "dead weight" doesn't mean jack-oh and if you ride a road bike everywhere you'll be in decent enough shape to keep that horrible weight from dragging you down.
Dont get me worng, i love my road bike, and it has its uses, but its not "superior" to a fixie

i mentioned a road bike since you were talking about added weight of derailleurs, which really doesnt make that much of a difference, especially if the rest of your bike is light. i do prefer road bikes to fixes though, i would personally never own a fixie. and if i did id make it a single speed with a brake.Just one pound could be as much as 5% however. edit: and id continue not being a trendy douche while riding it (not saying theyre all the same everywhere, but around here they most certainly are)what exactly is sigworthyComment

A brake is good, regardless in my opinion, if your going to ride anywhere with traffic. But what i was getting at is how is a fixie inefficient, like Corvallis said.i mentioned a road bike since you were talking about added weight of derailleurs, which really doesnt make that much of a difference, especially if the rest of your bike is light. i do prefer road bikes to fixes though, i would personally never own a fixie. and if i did id make it a single speed with a brake.
