WTF is the purpose of a fixed gear bike???? It's like having a car with 1 gear, it's fucking retarded. Hard to start, slow top speed, inefficient, slow, etc... Would any of you volunteer to weld a driveshaft strait from your diff to your engine and call it 'fix3d'? I don't get it.

they suck. you go threw tires like nothing because of how you need to stop. plus all the little rich kids in sf get them and do not know how to ride them. rich hipster kids on fixed bikes + san francisco hills = dents in your car and dead people!!!sigpic

Fixie's are kinda dumb since you need a brake to really ride anywhere. Cool for tricks or what not, but i don't see the point. You can't coast on them.
Free hub single speed bikes is another story. Having one gear is perfect for some riding, like on my dirt jumping bike it works out fine, I really only need to pedal on flat, slight uphills, or downhill. One gear is fine, less to break and less think about (good since I'm a noob). The free hub means I can coast too.Originally posted by z31maniacI just hate everyone.

1. Fixed geared bikes are not hard to start unless you have a stupidly high gearing, like for the track, or you are extremely weak.
2. Your top speed can be very high, also depending on your gearing and wheel sizes. On the other end of the spectrum it can be extremely low, like a ratio of 1x1 where you just spin spin spin which would also enable start very easily from a stop.
3. The top speed for your average fixed rider might not be that high but riding in the 20+ mph range on the street isnt that hard if youre in decent shape and the speeds racers reach on the track are much higher.
4. Fixed, or single speed bikes, are really efficient IMO but I feel its largely depending on your location. If you are in a pancake flat city, like I am, then you wont be changing gears often, if ever, anyway. Super hilly places will be much harder to ride since you cant make the climbs easier by gearing down and then you exert a ton of energy trying not to fly down the other side, but I know people that do it everyday and do it well.

Darin, did you try doing any research on what they are all about and why people like to ride them?
I love my fixed gear, more than I've ever liked any other kind of bike. They are amazingly fun to ride. And I can stop just fine, I have a brake on my bike. Comparing it to a car with one gear is absolutely ridiculous. I get my bike going just fine off the line, and am up to speed in no time. And I do mean speed.
Deutschman, try doing some research before you open your mouth when you don't know what you're talking about. Most of the kids that I ride with are pretty damn far from rich. That's one of the beauties of these bikes. They don't take a lot of money to build a nice one.
