I am old enough to have a son in college.
I vote Republican
I am an honorably discharged Vietnam Era vet
I am conservative.
I am a cancer survivor
Legalize it and get on with bigger issues this country faces.
Here is an example of "sound" policy. As a cancer patient I can have Marinol. Which is basically pot in pill form. However, as a pilot if I test positive when I renew my medical I could loose my pilot"s license. FAA (Federal) laws.
Because even though I am sick enough to warrant Marinol it still has other legal ramifications. Really smart.
While I am on a tirade, legal drinking age. If you are old enough to enlist in the military, damn it, you should be able to have a beer. Or change the enlistment age to 21.
This being said I do not endorse stupid abuse of anything. Moderation is the key. Don't drink your liver into submission and don't go through life stoned.
+1. Damn well put.
The ONLY reason the drinking age is still 21 is that those in power can reliably assume people 18-21 are utterly apathetic and uninvolved.
And though I've never smoked pot or done drugs (yes, I know caffeine and alcohol are drugs but you know what I mean) I'd much rather be around stoned people than drunk people.
It should be legal. Will more people use it then currently do? Well ya. Now legalize it and give it 10 years and I'll bet that way less people are using it then currently are. How dumb are we? We claim to be the land of the free, and a place where people can do what they want, yet we deal far more harmful substances to our people and waste our money locking up and fighting pot dealers? I've smoked, there have been nights with just a joint or nights burning multiple ounces. In the end its still better then drinking. No hangover, no getting sick, no addiction, the "mind altering" is relaxing and for me just makes me open up let go of stupid issues and honesty get closer to some people because when I'm high I say what I mean and don't try to hide emotions.
The government could tax it and make money. Its less harmful then tobacco or alcohol. There would be control laws on it. I see no issues with making it legal. The only argument I have read in this thread is the you become a "loser", and the only statement to back that up is that you can't pass a piss test or keep a job. Hey guys if it was legal you wouldn't have to take a piss test and wouldn't lose your job over it. Its not addictive and if you gateway from it then you had more issues to begin with and pot was not what sent you over. I have drank, smoked, and used harder drugs, I can say that I see no problem what so ever with kicking back and smoking a joint once in a while. I have never herd of anyone having health issues because of pot unless they are allergic. The only deaths outside of underlying health issues are from gangsters shooting each other up. Make it legal, you reduce crime and stupid pointless deaths, and you raise money. It should be legal and I see it being legal before Obama leaves office.

all this shit about lowering the drinking age, and legalizing marijuana may be bad for younger people need to look at the underlying issue.
Parenting. It is not the states fucking responsibility to make sure your dumb ass makes the right choices for your life, it is how you are raised, your own set of morals, instilled from childhood.
the fact that people worry about the children shows that we are one step closer to the Gov being all in your business. some people obviously can't handle their shit, and we all know mistakes happen. but playing the "what aboutta teh chilren" shit is lame.
+1 on legalizing it.

No the only reason the drinking age is 21 is because if a state changes it to a lower age then they lose government highway funding.

I never understood the concept of the 21-year old drinking.
Kids have supposedly enough judgement to drive a deadly car at 15-16 depending on States
Kids have supposedly enough judgement to get weapons at 18
Kids have supposedly enough judgement to get drafted at 18 But kids are now grown up enough to drink before 21
No the only reason the drinking age is 21 is because if a state changes it to a lower age then they lose government highway funding.
If the youth of America got off their asses and made sure their Federal government, i.e. their local US congressional and senatorial reps were under pressure to change the law on a national level, then highway funding would be a moot point. IOW, if the law were overturned at the federal level, that provision would no longer be in effect.
first off, lol at jflip, he's so arrogant he doesn't know it. it caused the lulz ALL around reading through this thread.
second, i dont think the clowns we have as political representatives really care about this issue, they have cash for caulkers and spending all of our money to worry about.
&
personaly i dont think weed should be illegal, its not really bad for you, cigarettes are worse. but i also could really give a shit if the gov't says i cant smoke a joint, if i really wanted one, i'd smoke a fucking joint. end of fucking story.
