It was about both slavery and secession but the issue of SLAVERY CAME BEFORE SECESSION! Also, Lincoln was ALWAYS an abolitionist. He did not free the slaves for merely political reasons.Comment

The reason that the Southern states seceded from the Union was because the Northern states wouldn't let them expand slavery into the Western territories.

Slavery was a reason, but not the only one. It was never purely a war over slaves.Originally posted by Beej '86 325esevery time an M-tech 1 spoiler is destroyed, a baby seal dies.87 325:83 jetta coupe:99 volvo c70:99 volvo s70Originally posted by JparkrThe last thing we need are more of the retards on here thinking they are engineers too.Comment

The south and the north simply didn't like each other and disagreed on almost everything, slavery was just one of those things. I'm sure slavery was a big part of the cultural reason, but the north did not go to war because of slavery, perhaps the argument could be made for the south succeeding, in some part, because of slavery.Originally posted by z31maniacI just hate everyone.

Yup, that's what I said. But it's also ignorant to say that the Civil War was not about slavery because it was very much about slavery. The whole reason that the South seceded was because slavery was key to their economy and the North said they couldn't expand it into the territories. The ironic thing is that if the South hadn't seceded and started the war, which they did when they attacked Fort Sumter, slavery would probably have continued to exist in the states in which it was already legal.Comment
