The way you phrase that question makes it sound as though most of the music created in the history of humanity wouldn't have ever been created if it weren't for the lure of a record contract--something we know isn't true.

Perhaps the better question is, what will be the role of media publishers in the future as we move to communication methods which permit artists to widely distribute their artistic efforts to their audiences without the "help" of publishers?
