The way you phrase that question makes it sound as though most of the music created in the history of humanity wouldn't have ever been created if it weren't for the lure of a record contract--something we know isn't true.

Perhaps the better question is, what will be the role of media publishers in the future as we move to communication methods which permit artists to widely distribute their artistic efforts to their audiences without the "help" of publishers?
I guess from dk's and Wiglaf's responses I got a bit of a "Oh those poor artists don't make any money off CD sales" regarding monetary compensation for contracts that were willfully entered into by both parties.

Mostly true. If you sell 10,000 cd's a year through them, that won't even amount to minimum wage. The value of the contract is in using their resources to build up the fan base that will buy tickets and other merchandise. In this respect they are quickly becoming an obsolete unnecessary hurdle for an artist to deal with.

Refusing to adapt will be the demise of the publishers, you can't fight the world. This is the same freaking story every time something comes out, records, tapes, cd's.. now look at them fret over losing what they fought so hard to squash in the first place.

How the hell did this become a conservative vs lib argument. I'll will steal music until the day I get caught and my political preferences have nothing to do with that.
