A good friend of mine, and his wife, are both teachers and for the years since we graduated college at least one of them gets a part-time job in the summer to make extra money.

I make a sizeable chunk more than $35k/year, however, I'm at work during that 3 month summer and the two weeks around Christmas, spring break, etc.

If you removed that 4 months of pay (just an example since I wouldn't be working) you get down to around what a teacher in OK makes.

Really you dont think those teachers are not working during the summer??????????????

They are there 2-3 weeks before school starts and 2-3 weeks after the kids leave. so there is your 4-6 weeks of that vacation gone. Most have to attend further classes (to learn the latest's PC topic to push many times its required and THEY HAVE TO PAY TO ATTEND not the district) and or work towards their masters. Thats normally another 2 weeks. So there you are down to maybe a month - month 1/2 off. My mom is then working on lesson plans and taking all the projects apart and other related schoolly things. She gets truly maybe 3 weeks free in end of july and august. And after 9 months of dealing with 30+ of some one else's little misbehaved shit heads you need the time off.

But yes you are right WAY TOO MUCH IS spent on Administration cost and the teachers have to spend much of their own money on supplies form folders to pencils to teaching aids. It really is disgusting.

Schools are not worth a shit not from lack of funding or bad teachers but more from lack parenting

IMO, tenure should only apply at universities, since it's actually given for a formalized reason. First-in-last-out union layoff polices hurt more than they help.

Based on the amount of partying I've done with them over the last few years, the time he spends hunting/fishing, no, they aren't working at all over the summer.

And as far as the rest of what you said, as far as needing time off after dealing with peoples crappy kids.....................pretty sure you (general you) knew that was going to be the case when you signed up to be a teacher. So you don't get to use on the expected job responsibilities as a reason to complain/demand/justify more time off, more pay, etc.

Another thing, in many places teachers pay is based on that shorter work year, but a teacher can elect to be paid less while working during the school year, and have that differed so they can draw a pay check while on summer break. They have already earned that money they draw in the summer.

Even still in most places they are woefully underpaid, when my mom moved to AZ with years of experience salary was 19k the 1st year, Now 15 years latter shes at 32ish. Really you expect some one to spend 40k on a professional degree and then pay them beans????

If you extend the school year to year round deal you will have to increase the teachers compensation 25% accordingly.

Why do you have to blame it on anybody? Of course it's the parents fault, everyone knows that, but telling them they're a fuck up isn't going to fix anything. Blame it on Mt. Rushmore for all I care, that's about as effective as telling the dumb black mother of 8 that she's a lousy parent and shouldn't have children.

It's time to stop pointing fingers and actually do something about it. The parents can't and won't and yelling at them isn't going to change a damn thing.

              No

Entitlements, where learn no matter how much of a fuck up you are, you be as lazy as you want and the govt (Some one else) will always do everything for you.

No starvation and always being warm and dry = No motivation to better your self. After all whats more fun working or sitting on your ass getting housed feed and paid by the govt to play x box ???????????????

I will say a faltering of faith in general has also lead to this as well. I am not religious at all so its really hard for me to cite this as the sole cause, as I dont fit that gimme mentality and have very conservative traditional values.l

Edit: Do something, entitlement reforms, cut the fuckers off.

You guys are really getting into it, haha.

I think that extending the time in school would be really bad. In middle-high school everything was stretched to the last minute. My point is that if we had school much longer and for more days of the year, it would cause more useless days at school and a lot more useless stretching. It would change the pace of learning and make it a lot slower, which isnt needed.

Lastly, why are we comparing America to a bunch of shitty countries? :D

I rarely made it through all of my curriculum, I don't know what you're talking about. If there really is an information shortage then they would obviously add in more.

Teachers spend at least 1/3 of the school year getting kids back up to speed with what they learned the previous year. We absolutely need school year-round to remain competitive.

Shitty countries? We're going to be outclassed in a really, really bad way if we don't get serious about fundamentally changing our education problems.

Haven't we had this discussion before....a bunch of kids talking about how shitty teachers are and others who know 1 bad teacher and assume its the teachers fault for a shitty system. BLAME PARENTS AND POLITICIANS first, so glad I got out of being a teacher when I did that's for sure.

the solution is easy. take your children out of school, teach them yourself. less than 100 years ago, most(a lot) people were home schooled. if you think it doesn't work or public school is better, ask your grand parents. its not hard. it just takes a little time.
public school is a joke, the state figured out along time ago to get them while their young. get them used to doing as there told, follow there rules, there school policy's, train them to believe the way there being thought is correct.
