Most kids don't do anything remotely academic during the summer and forget what they've been taught.

That is clearly a responsibility of a student's parents, however I think that if our country's educational standards are to ever improve to keep up with other countries, we need to go to year-round schooling (amongst other changes).

We don't really have an actual reason that students are given the summer off anymore.

I think it's a lot more complicated than that.
Kids and how they retain information. The way they are taught. And what they are taught. None of these things do our schools do well imo. Then you add on the fact that many kids parents could care less about what their children are learning or even that they are learning at all. Parent responsibility as we both agree there.
I don't think adding more school time will make up the difference. It would help but can you imagine the shit storm it would cause that schools would need even more money. And that is really where the lack of efficiency is with $ vs student in the US.

Has anyone pointed out how underfunded school systems are going to pay for a longer year? If the year gets longer the teachers union is gonna have a cow and demand a gazillion dollars per teacher.

Teachers in OK start around $33k, which if IIRC is about the national avg for salary. Combined with a state that has a low cost of living.

In OK, you'll take home about $2k a month on that salary.

Which is more than enough to live on around here. Are you going to live in a 3000sq/ft house and drive an Audi to work? No, but you won't be applying for Section 8 coupons and food stamps either.

Too much money is spent on administration of public institutions. If you want professionals in the classroom, pay professional wages.

                  Tenure also needs to go.
This is total bullshit in Oregon. My sister is a music teacher at our local high school, and she makes $42,000 a year while in her SECOND year. This is easily $10,000+ above the average annual income for FULL TIME hard working skilled people in my area, all the while she has unprecedented health and retirement benefits.

FACT: she didn't go to school for this because she wanted to give the gift of music to kids, it's because she is incapable of accomplishing anything out in the real world, and teaching was the shortest distance between college and a lucrative job.

My Wife is a teacher. The biggest obstacle to quality education is disruptive students and the system whereby they are allowed to get away with it.

Parents can demand their lazy inattentive kids get special ed which forces the school to pay for tutors, behaviorists and programs for that one student.

The issue is parents that are allowed not to parent and then are allowed to make it the schools problem.,

                      That needs to end.

I responded from page 1 without seeing any more.

You are 100% correct Mr. S. My Wife has two masters, the health plan her school offers is so bad & expensive I pay 150 a month to have her on mine.

She makes less here than she did in Mexico which was a joke considering she was at the top of the pay scale there.

Good teachers are over worked, under paid unappreciated and generally treading water.

My Wife does it because she loves the kids and loves making a difference.
She has several kids a year that she helps go from completely not getting it to mastering the curriculum, that is an amazing accomplishment.

My sister holds only a teaching certificate, no masters degree. And as I said her pay extends WELL BEYOND the average annual salary in this area, even though she's free from her professional responsibilities for almost 2 months of the year. And while her salary is considerably less than say, an engineer or healthcare professional, she is also less educated, puts in less hours, and has "teacher's aides" to do her dirty work.
Perhaps your mom should consider moving to Oregon. Or maybe she should play her master's degree differently and apply for a job in administration- here the high school principal's position pays six figures.
I understand that dealing with fuckhead kids day in and day out is stressful and discouraging, I was one of the fuckheads. But I also think that public schools are like most other government entities- they are inefficient and incompetent, and the solution the government and it's workforce typically suggests first is that they need more money to be effective. Out here in the private sector, we have to PERFORM FIRST to get a raise.

Most teachers out there are overpaid no matter what the pay scale for their school is. Before all of you try and prove me wrong because you know a teacher and think they aren't appreciated, I would suggest actually working in the education field. Yes good teachers are underpaid but a good teacher is a rarity, most are just lazy government workers who couldn't survive a trial period in a real job. Kids are most certainly little shits and every parent thinks their kid is a shiny little snow flake but that is only part of the problem. Schools are filled with teachers waiting on retirement and overpaid admins who sit around with their fingers up their butts all day. It isn't the unions that are the problems, it is in fact possible to fire a tenured teacher who is terrible at their job, it just takes an admin willing to do theirs. Longer school years will fix nothing because our education system is broken, it is run from top to bottom with incompetent people. I would like to think I know what I am talking about since I started my career in education IT and had the pleasure of dealing with teachers and admins up until I started my own IT company with my old boss. I also have a few teachers in my family; my mom, dad, sister, aunt, father in law (college level), mother in law and brother in law

Plus a Zillion on the over paid and shity ass Admin that do nothing and make well into the 6 figures.

The whole thing with admins really sickens me the most, they literally contribute nothing to education in any way but they make their salaries confidential to keep the public in the dark, it's a disgusting waste of public funds.
