Swing sets removed at some W.Va. schools

I really don't know what to say about this than are you fucking kidding me! This country is truly over!

Swing sets removed at some W.Va. schools

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100901/...sets_removed_1CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Elementary school playgrounds in one West Virginia county are losing their swing sets.
Swings are being removed from Cabell County schools in southern West Virginia in part because of lawsuits over injuries.
Cabell County schools safety manager Tim Stewart said Wednesday that a lot of parents are accusing him of being un-American, but he says the cost of maintaining a safe surface is too expensive.
Stewart says a lawsuit in the past year involved a youngster who broke his arm jumping off a swing like Superman. It was settled for $20,000.
Other equipment such as monkey bars will remain. Stewart says the schools are able to maintain the proper protection underneath them.

This is so goofy. Two of my four kids broke their arms while at school, on the playground, but unlike some, I'm not a money-hungry ambulance chaser. This is as bad as the schools here taking away art, band, and phys-ed. Like someone mentioned already, I guess America isn't obese enough already, let's make it worse...

just for reference, when I went to school we landed on the ground, not sand, pea stone, shredded rubber, or beds of pillows and foam.

It teaches you coordination, and gives you a sense of self preservation, cuz the ground is fucking hard and it hurts. There for falling down really hard on it is bad

When I was a kid we used to see who could swing the highest and then jump the furthest. Stupid kids need to learn how to jump off a swing properly.

The level of lawsuit driven safety conscious cocksuckery in this country is truly appalling. If something is any fun at all and someone get hurt there is a lawsuit and it is declared unsafe and the activity is banned or the product is pulled form the market. what a great country this is becoming. just wait, pretty soon you will be required by law to wear knee/elbow pads, a helmet and a high visibility jacket just to walk down the sidewalk. this is where were heading if the minivan driving, suburbanite soccer moms keep this shit up.

Obese, wrapped in a foam padded suit, and stupid is no way to have to go through life.

When all the schools started getting rid of the 20ft tall metal slides that get so hot they burn off your skin in the summer, my mom bought the ones from the school she taught at. They are still up at my parent's house, maybe she should start looking for a set of swings for a proper old school playground.

It's an unusual solution for a real problem. But the problem is that these law suits are filed and they actually win. Who's kid did something really stupid??
