Yes. People considered Tesla's works spooky, magic, and even witchcraft.
The forgotten genius would laugh at what some people today call "advanced tech".

Media Fail: Chevy Volt Makes NO Money, Costs Taxpayers Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars Per Car

          By Seton Motley | July 17, 2012 | 09:54

The Jurassic Press is missing much in their reporting on the $50 billion bailout of General Motors (GM). The Press is open channeling for President Barack Obama - allowing him to frame the bailout exactly as he wishes in the 2012 Presidential election.
The President is running in large part on the bailout’s $30+ billion loss, uber-failed “success.” And the Press is acting as his stenographers. An epitome of this bailout nightmare mess is the electric absurdity that is the Chevrolet Volt. The Press is at every turn covering up - rather than covering - the serial failures of President Obama’s signature vehicle.

nice opinion peice, which also cites other extremely biased sources.

I've seen a few volts around. Honestly it would be perfect for my daily commute, I could probably drive to work and back for a full week on 2 charges. But i won't be buying anything like that new.

Well, there must be another GM vehicle that is an uber-fail too, since it has less sales per month than the Volt: http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01...s-figures.html

And the only people who buy it are richers too!

Ummm while thats getting to be more and more true, there are still lots of upper middle class people buy them, not just richers. That and I am fairly sure its still a profitable unit. The volt needs to be selling mid 5 figures every month for a number of years to be come profitable.

The point was comparing halo cars to entry-level compacts is for morons.

that was a terrible article. "template" cars like the fucking malibu and impala are what got GM into the bailout mess in the first place. awful, bland, pointless, irrelevant.

Bingo. The automotive world would be a terrible thing if all that existed were boring cookie cutter cars to sell a lot and reduce development and mold expenses. What if there were only Corollas, Camrys, Cruzes, Jettas, Versas, Fiestas, Accents, and Civics?? Those are among the top 20 in sales for Q1 2012. Why make anything other than those? Why redesign cars every 4 years? Just save money and keep selling Berettas and E21s.

If there weren't halo cars and catering to niche markets or enthusiasts, then all we would have were boxes on wheels to choose from. I still find it shocking that after years of stupid management at GM, people are now attacking them being proactive and forward-thinking rather than late to the game all the time.

The reason for the sub quality cookie cutter cars is/was their overhead.

That's not really the whole story... if you want the truth - http://www.amazon.com/Car-Guys-vs-Be.../dp/1452632936

But seriously, as has been mentioned previously in this thread, they produced crappy cars and pushed them with incentives, had ridiculous design constraints, and generally made what no one wanted. Overhead would have simply made good cars more expensive, not make them bad quality. Making a car that would be bought by people who could afford whatever they wanted is a step up, although many are too narrow-minded and politically-biased to realize it, and spin it into a bad thing. It's a short-coming that too many Americans cannot think independently about things from what the talking heads tell them to believe.

GM was known for their big SUVs that Americans loved when gas was cheap and crappy cars that hardly had any profits on any of them, and that was what put them into bankruptcy. It's stupidity to flame them for being ahead of the curve and adopting technology instead of behind it and outdated.

Price it slightly above the gas Cruze and this will become reality.
Even the post communist brands are selling their boring cars in monthly six figures.
