    1) Middle-Middle class DINK, haven't pulled myself up to the "upper-middle class" yet.
    2) The Fairtax would not cut taxes, it actually provides the same amount of funding as the current tax structure. For Medicaid/Medicare/SS everything, the main point is that it simplifies the tax code by leaps and bounds.

    But it dramatically reduces the need for the IRS, tax lawyers and trickery since it's just a national sales tax. So your income, savings, investment/real estate earnings.

    So basically the thousands and thousands and thousands of pages of tax law is reduced to a national sales tax, which would need to be approx 23%. But of course you're still subject to local/county/city sales tax. For most people, it averages out to a 30% sales tax on all goods purchased.

    But the flattax/Fairtax will never happen, because right now the politicians use the tax code for reward and punishment. It's too powerful for them to ever give up.

      well said. Dink here too. would love to go back to a fair tax system but these jackasses enjoy playing God too much. I always like to compare them with the analogy that they break our legs and hand us a crutch, then telling us "without us you can't walk". Would obviously be better had they not been there to begin with

        I know we are on the same page here and have been for a long while. But most of the things I have read about the fair tax is that the VAT needs to be about 13%-15% not the 23% you have listed.

        But sadly we will end up with a 15-20% VAT in top or the IRS some time I fear. They will never give up the main weapon of control and fear to keep both citizenry and industry under the thumb of govt control.

          VAT != Fairtax.

          A VAT would be an additional tax ON TOP of the current tax structure.

            Yes essentially a VAT = Fair tax = a national sales tax, nothing more nothing less.

            But yes when you eliminate the IRS and and just use the VAT it becomes the Fair tax, and conversely when you keep the IRS and institute the fair tax on top of that it Becomes a VAT.
