So even though Congress/Prez will keep their paychecks, the guys overseas getting shot at, will have to continue to report to work, but not receive their paychecks.

In all reality, the shutdown will most likely be over quickly, back pay will be reinstated and hopefully shouldn't cause to much of a problem for guys and gals fighting for us (and any family members dependent on that income).


However, my question is............If military are now "non essential," does that mean we get to bring them out of the Middle East/N. Africa and back home? Especially now that there are rumors of ground troops being prepared to go into Libya.


On a related note, I also Congresswoman (can't remember her name at the moment) who said, paraphrasing here, "Congress needs to be paid, I live paycheck to paycheck like most Americans, wah wah blah blah blah."

Then why didn't you pass a damn budget? The other 800,000 Federal employees about to be furloughed don't make a $180k/year to start with, own two homes (including a $3 million dollar mansion in DC), and will be in the same position as you if the paychecks stop coming.

The answer is that it's technically unconstitutional to change Congress' pay during a session. Mind you, the fuckers had better donate it and vot in a change so that future congressional shut downs stop pay.

What he said. The two parties are getting in the way of what's good for the country. Neither side can get anything done because neither side wants to compromise anything.

The dems got greedy as hell when they had the majority and still didn't pass anything which should cost them the white house, house, and senate as far as I'm concerned. They could have done something, anything, but at least pass some legislation so we can see if it will work or not.

Not that the republicans are much better... but hopefully they will pass legislation to at least give us a try at something different than the status quo.

the problem was that the Democrats wanted too badly to compromise, but obstructionism and rabid party loyalists on the Republican side threw any and all proposals to the wind in the name of their ideology.

Sad and true. And the I agree the dems should have just rammed legislation through when they had the chance. We all know the republicans will.

As for career politicians... I agree it is far too lucrative and limits should be in place to keep politics from becoming a career. 8 or 10 years of total service possibly? They are after all supposed to be serving their country be holding office, not lining their pockets.

We're coming to work as usual.

The only Gov people who get paid during a Shutdown are Congress, and I'm sure The President/Cabinet, etc.

Well sorry but your title is wrong. They're not reclassified as anything except essential personnel. By your definition all gov employees (except for the members of congress) are non essential personnel because none of them are getting paid until the budget matter is resolved whether they continue to work during the shutdown or not. If anyone is trolling its you. Try using an accurate title next time.
