Why do Americans still dislike Atheists?

I wouldn't call CorvallisBMW a bigot. It's when intolerance and suppression of religion comes in that someone can be called a bigot.
I bet even Corvallis has some very religious friends. As do I.

Actually all you did was say that carrying out "your own version of faith" is different than professing a faith.

So you are making a value judgement on someone's interpretation of the Bible, and let's face it, it's all an interpretation of an interpretation of an interpretation.

The Bible is used as the book of reference now for how many sects of Christianity, and all those different sects believe THEY are practicing it "the right way." And I'm not talking about crazies like Westboro, I'm saying just like the difference between Methodists and Baptists, or Episcopaleans (I know I butchered the spelling) and Catholics. All these people have their own interpretation that they believe is more "correct" than the other sects.

Don't take it personal, I'm just curious how people come to these conclusions.

It's hard to say. If anyone sect says "We have the only way" and it differ's from the Bible, then I'd say they are wrong. I know the whole interpretation dealio but there's a lot of grey area. Like open hand subjects and close hand subjects. The Bible has a ton of open hand subjects. Take pot for instance. Or hell, even just smoking. Any Pastor that gets up in the morning and hates the smell of cigarettes then goes in Sunday and says to his congregation that smoking IS a sin, would be lying, right? The Bible doesn't say it IS a sin. It's a grey area. You can make the case that "Your body is a Temple..." means that you must keep it pure BUT, then you must follow that line of reasoning to it's extent and say that too much sugar, or bacon, or Wendy's is poisoning your "temple" and thus, you have to cut starches, sugar, hydrogenated fats... blah blah completely from your diet. You could even go so far as to say that anything not beneficial is a "sin", right?

The Bible doesn't say that. It's a grey area. There's no one singular way you MUST be or perform or adhere to in terms of "open hand" subjects. Close hand subjects in terms of Christianity are many. Different sects believe different things on many of the open hand issues but, their core beliefs and principles coincide. Divinity of Christ, God, etc... thus what makes the core Christian elements.

I've come to realize through my own experiences and most of the gripes about Christian's in general are the open hand subjects and a lot of "Christian's" taking liberties with telling everyone around them what and what not to do. It should never be, "You're having sex with your boyfriend at 13? You're going to hell!" over "You're having sex with your boyfriend at 13? You know that's dangerous and you could seriously get hurt..." etc. See what I'm saying? I hope I'm getting it across but I'm fairly tired after the long grave yard shift. This is my 9pm.

Yes but I lost respect for him for his liberal views but I would still be his friend and just avoid the subject. Everyone would be a bigot if we classified it that way.

I lost respect for him because he's a bigot. See where I'm going? He lost respect because of someone's ELSE'S world view which does NOTHING directly in regards to his own life? Instead of discussing or just avoiding the subject or perhaps, just maybe, show the tiniest bit of respect, he goes full tilt about how enlightened he is and how stupid anyone of faith is. Yeah, edit it all you want but you already said EXACTLY how you feel and more of who you are.

Truth be told? I don't really care. The honest truth of the matter is a lot of Christian's fuck it up for Christians plenty. But, that doesn't warrant the exact reaction of those same retarded "Christians" by non-Christians, does it? It's the same thing from opposite ends.

So while I understand where Corvallis and scabbz is coming from with the hypocrisy of Christians all around as it exists, I do draw the/a line at being bigoted and claiming intellect inferiority based on someone's Faith or beliefs when it comes to area's such as "religion".
