With my line of work and the lack of bills I have at the moment about 8 months (while paying of lots of debts at the same time)
I refuse to buy into a mortgage with out having a 20% down payment minimum, and 8 months still in cash in the bank. Depends on your current spending habits...
To get on a plan start out with some simple reductions in disc spend such as these off the cuff -
1) go a whole week without ever buying some food/drink/snack whatever in a convenience store or gas station
2) go a week with eating out just twice and budget that to less than $25 a person
3) go a month without spend on clothes, magazines or other items that nickel and dime you out of $10 to 50 or more dollars at a time
4) quit going out for a month or two to the bars and dropping 40 or 50 bucks or more on drinks
5) say no to any type of getaway weekend/going to a friends wedding or out of town vacation for 3 months...
If you can knock out just 3 or more of this list of 5 for several months running the cash will start to pile up. Trust me, its really hard to always have to say no to friends and such but the feeling you get when the cash starts to pile up, you will be really glad you did it.
Even sweeter is the feeling you have when you compare your financial situation to those of others.Comment
