Gas leak exception to the 4th Amendment.

Main Street and Canal Street are among the areas affected. Not only are those streets filled with homeowners, but businesses are also impacted by the issue.
"It’s going to be devastating to be without heat or power for this holiday season. It’s our crunch, time," said Molly Silva, a business owner.
If no one is home at the time, police officers along with a locksmith are entering homes to shut the valves off.

    WTF?

ummm Like most municipal water, systems gas services, there is a shut off valve at the street or the meeter is on the out side of the home. Sounds fishy to me

the home owner do not own the meters or the gas lines. there for since the owner's (gas co) gave permission it's not breaking the 4th amendment.

This is the correct answer. They can cut off the gas from outside your house. There is no need to enter ones house to turn off the gas from the house.

          Very fishy

Apparently these meters are inside the houses...? Fuck you guys are kind of over the top sometimes.

Anybody remember that big ass explosion in California awhile back?

And that is a very poorly written article....

technicians are continuing to work on a natural gas outage in Westerly and that some restorations will be made overnight Thursday into Friday morning.

70 technicians will be working through the overnight hours to turn gas back on, and starting at 5 a.m. Friday 200 technicians will again be going door to door to continue making restorations.
              then at the bottom

If no one is home at the time, police officers along with a locksmith have been entering homes to shut the valves off.
              What now?

I know what I am talking about worked in the business for the last 18 years. You can shut the gas service off out side the home period never seen a service with out an outside shut off

Oh no, I'm not saying you're wrong. I went to school to be a Civil Engineer. I have a loose understanding of how the things work (mostly dicking around on CAD doing building/house/lot plans) and those valves are generally outside the house.

Oh and that big explosion in CA was a 30" or 36" ( I dont remember which) High pressure TRANSMISSION owned by PG&E (of erin brockivich Sp. Fame) line not a low pressure distribution line. It was put in, in the mid 70's (76 IIRC) and was in a very rural area at that time. There was an odd section of line pipe in there that was put together rather poorly even for the time, more than likely to make a bad tie in work. Also IIRC it was the long seam weld, of the pipe that let go not a line weld or the metallurgy of the pipe itself

Not a main line that runs from the street to your house with a cut off valve between the two - outside your home.
