Everything Christianity does and exists for can be accomplished through not having any religious affiliation.
With that being said, Christianity is bought and sold as if its a good or something obtainable. Most of the serious answers I see in here sound like rhetoric from church, saying a bunch of something and nothing of anything in particular. Which pretty much describes the human race too when put into perspective. Pretty evident we're all a part of something bigger than ourselves, why people need to create a "reason" for being is way above me. Seems stupid. Look around at the planet Earth, is this not good enough for you?

Agreed. If there is a god, which is impossible to know, it's arrogant to think that we could know ANYTHING about him. The bible is a book of parables written by man many many years ago, then passed down and translated. Hardly a reliable source, but there are those who take it literally. And then if something is too ridiculous to be believable (like fitting 2 animals of every species onto a boat) they claim that that one story is a parable, refusing to acknowledge that the entire thing is more than likely pure fiction. Historians were around back in Jesus' day yet it's impossible to find any non-religious texts referencing him. Surely if someone came around performing miracles they would have been documented.

Not saying that the bible is worthless or that you couldn't learn anything from it, it just bugs me when people take it as God's word or whatever. Find me some proof that Jesus even existed.

Faith is ignoring the lack of evidence and buying into the crap that's being pushed by self-interested humans. If you think for yourself and find your own spiritual path it's going to hold a lot more meaning than just blindly following. But I don't want to burn for eternity in Hell so I might as well believe just to be safe

Sorry if that doesn't fit in with the rest of the thread. I'm not gonna read the whole thing but I assume after 6 pages it must have descended into general religious bashing by now.

Not quite. I used to call myself an atheist, and as ridiculous as I think the claims of a conscious self-creating force are it's impossible to know. I totally reject claims made by religion, but beyond that no one can say with certainty.

Lol....I pretty much use that term loosely. Really, I am not one who cares, so agnostic, sure, atheist, sure. Not that they are one in the same, I just have an agnostic point of view, but could be considered an athiest.

    What is god?

I'm pretty agnostic myself, but I do feel I answer to a higher power. My "little voice inside" is my god, but not in the worship sense, more in a do what is right, accountability sense.

I went to church until I was 19. I am 22. I believe religion is a way to control people, or at least, it is used as such more often than not.

I don't hate one religion or the other, I just go along and worry about me. I don't try to push agnosticism on others, and I appreciate others not try to push religion on me.

My above post ("Whuut....") was mainly satirical.

God reveals his truth to his prophets. In the Old Testament, the Jews were God's people which lived the commandments. When you read the New Testament, you read about the Sadducees and Pharisees which were Jewish sects that took things way too literally such as how many steps you could take on the sabbath and debating on whether it was sin to help someone on the sabbath. These groups originated from God's truth but they became wicked, did not listen to God's prophets and distorted the truth over time.
Throughout the bible you can see a pattern of how God calls prophets to restore the truth, the people reject them and kill them, and the truth is distorted.

Read the parable of the wicked husbandmen for a parable told by Christ about this very same concept Matthew 21:33-46 KJV

I am not here to debate what I just posted. It is purely my understanding on the topic, take it or leave it.

I'd love for this to be a serious, and well responded thread, but its doomed to turn into an argument.
Not quite. Besides the Bible, I was refering to the nation of Israel as one of the greatest proof (at least for me) that God exists, and why I believe that Jesus Christ was his son. In the bible Ezekiel 66, it says that a nation would be born in a day. That happened on May 14,1948 and it still exists today despite of all the threats.
God's work with Israel is not finished. For those that read the Bible, this all can be found in Revlations.

Keep in mind that only in catholicism is immaculate conception a universal doctrine. In all other christian denominations beliefs range from immaculate conception (catholics and their protestant derivatives--Anglicans, Lutherans, and Calvinists) to being born of an unwed or young mother (fundamentalists - Four square, Church of God, and Seventh Day Adventists) to even the extreme position that a deity had physical intercourse with Mary (Mormons).

You answered the questions adequately thanks lol But when you say sent, do you mean sent from heaven like Jesus or people who essentially had a calling and walked around sharing the word? From what I gather you believe what I believe haha
I feel like you're setting me up for a trick question haha, but both in a sense.
Prophets were the elite(morals/chosen ways of life) of their society and chosen to be messengers because of it.

Jesus, however, was one sent from heaven in a sense.
Born as a miracle from the virgin Mary, it was announced by angel Gabriel, "I am only a messenger from your Lord(God), (to announce) to you the gift of a righteous son."

And you're right, we do both basically believe the same thing (:
