How come I, the liberal Canadian can understand this but the conservative republicans can't? Freedom of speech is great....so long as it doesn't offend me, right?

There are codes and regulations regarding the flag of the United States of America. It's not about freedom of speech to deface a national symbol. It's about having respect toward it.

            Naw, that isn't quite it.

That's your feeling and opinion on it, but symbols are not sacred. That's settled law.

Freedom of speech is ... This is my opinion. I can tell the difference.

No one is saying your not free to desicrate the flag,,,, which obviously you are. But how anyone can say that veterans or anyone else should not be infuriated over it is short sited and narrow minded. How dare anyone say that old timers should not take it seriously, I find it offensive and I am far from an old timmer. Just because some of you have no true beliefs it does not give you the right to say no-one else should have any beliefs, which is what it really boils down to.

              What a sad sad generation

its called relative morality and, since this is a political forum, it is central to the belief system of the progressive political movement. there is no black and white anything, just shades of grey. if its ok in my belief set, then fuck off, who are you to say i'm wrong or immoral?

i don't believe its part of the computer gen per se. demographic studies show the computer gen is more traditional in its political beliefs, that is to say pro-america, reigious, right vs wrong, more conservative than not and the 1st gen since the WWII gen where drug abuse is receding. its a failure of parenting and education (for some).

I find it offensive also, but then again i'm a dinosaur and believe in the constitution as written, good vs evil, and old fashioed morals like trying to be nice to everyone. that's why i haven't seen fit to include any of kershaw's idiotic ramblings in my sig

I find it confounding that the people who say its no big deal and its their freedom of speech right are defacing the very symbol of the country which affords those rights to them. How one can have that much disregard is beyond me.

Did not watch video, do not want to. If I saw anyone desecrating the flag (US) I would be outraged.

I just think people who deface the flag are stupid, and there's no need to get worked up about stupid people.

If you'd watch the video you'd learn that the man flying the flag is a veteran.

                      Yeah, fuck freedom of speech!

The guy isn't trying to disrespect the flag, it's just a misguided attempt at patriotism and support for our president. It's a non issue, move on with your life.

                        Right.

Rosa Parks once said "Stand for something or you will fall for anything. Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground."

Freedom of speech is great, but the Bars and Stars are what has afforded you and I those rights.

Serious, somethings just deserve respect, what you are defending is like poppin' a nut on your mom, because "Come on man, it's a woman, that's what they were designed for" without giving her the respect for creating you. Sure, you can bust one on a woman, but if you have any sense whatsoever, you respect certain things regardless of your freedoms.

Freedom doesn't excuse you from respect.

I straight out said he is showing disrespect to the flag.

                            What did I not comprehend?

Your analogies are pretty gross and therefore aren't up to par with this situation. Putting obama on a flag and busting a nut on your mom are kinda different. Your argument on respect is outdated. Our constitution isn't respected and yet we are all okay with the things that undermine it. (Cough... the Fed)

You can't take symbology out of context or too seriously. A flag is a flag is a flag. People died not for the flag but for the ideals it stands for. People continuously use the flag to sell their 'patriotic' merchandise not for the sake of patriotism but for their own financial gains. To me that's disrespectful but its all a wash in the end because we have the freedom to do that. Don't get so worked up over nothing, or is the country side just that boring for you by now?
