you should pay attention in history class if you can't see any difference between WWII and the war of 1812

There's really only two ways about it. They either don't care much themselves or are downplaying it because their boy ignored something very important that all Americans should respect. Either way it's a rather sad outcome.

Out of the 236 years we have been a country we have been at war for 209 years. Are you guys going to honestly hoot and holler about stuff like this? Isn't there a reason we have memorial day? Can we also be this pissed during every nagasaki and hiroshima bombing anniversaries the president doesn't attend?

It's about remembering the efforts of your nation and its losses, not those of your once enemies. I'll also side with Josh by acknowledging that WWII wasn't "some war", it had the potential to reshape the globe had the Allies not intervened. Downplay it all you want, there never has been a war prior to or after of the same scale or importance.

Considering our Capitol building was nearly burned down it is/was a pretty big deal but I guess since your right wing loving mind gets its nut from beating those socialist bastard nazis more I can see how one war is more important than an other. Those poor Korean vets must be pissed too.

The men who stormed the beaches of Normandy are heroes. But I can guarantee that very few of those men, if any, want to be revered as such or be the center of attention. True heroes do what they need to do and don't expect anything in return. Maybe they didn't want to be there in the first place, maybe their reason for enlisting was a selfish one, maybe they lost friends and family in the war, maybe they cowered behind a tank trap, maybe they accidentally killed an innocent French girl in Bayeaux. Whatever their story was, I think most of them just want to be left alone.

Yes it is true that invading Europe was NECESSARY, but the war shouldn't have happened in the first place. 70 million people died all because some racist prick with a funny mustache and a chip on his shoulder decided that one country wasn't enough, he needed a whole continent.

And before you say that I am being disrespectful, let me say that I have been to Normandy. I have stood on Omaha beach and I have seen the same hills and trees and sand that those men saw. I have walked through the endless rows of crosses at the cemetery. I have nothing but respect for what those men did that day. But D-day, and war altogether, should not be celebrated.

again memorial day. We are talking about a battle, not the whole war.

some anniversaries are more significant than others. those on even decades will trump an annversary that just represents another year. currently we are remembering 1942, 70 years ago. celebrating d-day would dilute Midway, arguably a more important victory. wait until 2014 for d-day.

the accepted name "World War 2" for the 1939-45 conflict may be contested. the Napoleonic wars (1799-1815), of which our war of 1812 was a small part, were world wide. and, the polictical repercussions of it lasted nearly 100 years. not to denigrate WW2, but it wasn't the most important war ever fought.
