More of the same from the media...

Over the past few months Car and Driver (CD) has ventured into politics. A while back they featured Joe Biden in their “What would you do differently” piece, which was for the most part a glowing PR opportunity for Mr. Biden. Then Aaron Robinson (second in command at CD, I think) who writes a monthly column along with feature articles, devoted a part of his column to taking pot shots at Jan Brewer, Arizona, and the Tea Party. This month the “Up Front” column has an Onion-esque segment on Mitt Romney, highlighting his rich-ness. Nothing but crickets in regard to those left of center.

Why is a car magazine getting political? The only reason I can think of is to use their platform to influence impressionable youngsters and oldsters who may be out of touch with current political affairs. More of the same from the media, it seems…

If you could pull up all the 'news' media American's are exposed to you will see a very fine tuned funneled version of events. In the end, the funnel leads to one point no matter what gets mixed in there. Its all fucked is my point ;)

Sounds like you should write a letter to the editor. I get C&D also and I agree they do occasionally have politically biased articles, mainly right leaning in my opinion. I read the Romney article and it was more or less an opportunity to make some witty political comments, probably to try and make the article more interesting than it was. I didn't really take it as a left leaning article, no more so than jokes that Jay Leno tries to rattle off every night.

Regardless, I have found the quality of the C&D writing getting worse over time, especially from the newer writers.

I understand what you both are saying. I guess I was hoping that the car mags would remain true to their mission and stick with cars and automotive related topics.

I can expect the views of personalities / commentators like Leno, Mahr, O'Reilly and Conan to seep out, which is okay. I like them for they are, unlike journalists who I like for their ability to convey info with flare, color and interest. I don't care to know Aaron Robinson's political leanings, I want to know how he feels about the FSR (not to be confused with the FSM ;)

And yes, automotive journalism was imo some of the best writing on the planet... I still like Don Sherman, Csaba Csere, Ezra Dyer and Peter Egan though. Jamie Kitman is pretty good, too.

It seems that Aaron Robinson has Hollywood aspirations. He is writing for a car show and was an extra on a set. Maybe a certain political bent is a door-opener in HW?

Not surprising that i don't like Car and Driver from the start.
