it's only august, but let's start the lies

Some Republican governors this year asked the Obama administration for some new flexibility on welfare standards -- the governors had some ideas about moving folks from welfare to work and needed the White House to sign off. Obama agreed -- existing work requirements would stay in place, but states, if they want to, can take advantage of new flexibility when it comes to experimenting with existing law. This is the sort of shifting-power-to-the-states policy that Republicans are supposed to love. As of this morning, however, it's the basis for a new Mitt Romney attack ad.
It's important to realize this is as dishonest an ad as you'll ever see -- in 2012 or in any other campaign cycle.

For those who can't watch clips online, the ad shows President Clinton signing welfare reform into law in 1996, "requiring work for welfare." The spot then argues, however, that President Obama "quietly announced a plan to gut welfare reform by dropping work requirements." The voiceover tells viewers, "Under Obama's plan, you wouldn't have to work and wouldn't have to train for a job. They just send you your welfare check.... and welfare to work goes back to being plain old welfare."

We then learn, "Mitt Romney will restore the work requirement because it works."

Romney's lying. He's not spinning the truth to his advantage; he's not hiding in a gray area between fact and fiction; he's just lying. The law hasn't been "gutted"; the work requirement hasn't been "dropped." Stations that air this ad are disseminating an obvious, demonstrable lie.

yes lets keep supporting people and stop making them at least do something for them selves. Yeah that will fix the problem.

O signs order allowing states to OPT out enforcing the WORK requirement for long term welfare recipients. While not all states will pick it up, we all know what ones will. SO there for like I said, letting people get everything and do nothing for them selves will surely solve the issues???

I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I traveled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer. - Ben Franklin

no, that is blatantly false! that is exactly what romney is claiming. i used to think people would read the entire article before commenting, but im guessing that's not true here?

it simply allows states to experiment with other methods of transitioning recipients from welfare to work. if one method is not effective... try try again.

I read the release form HHS, from 7/12 about 2 weeks ago, not a blog from one of most leftist O supporting media talking heads there is. While rommney has / is trying to spin a mole hill in to a mountain I agree, the ground work for his claim has been laid and signed into law by the 0.

Dude, even Clinton (who signed the original law) has come out and said it has not been affected at all and called romney a straight up liar.

There are some seriously conflicting reports on when Romney left Bain. Until Romney releases his tax returns proving he left in 1999, I'm very skeptical.

So where's your response to romneys lies?

its curious that you've been silent so far about obama and his outright lies, yet feel compelled to complain about romney

just saying kershaw, your righteous indignation is funny

edit; no, its not ok to lie, and that specifically is why i have been anti-obama for a long time.
the man lied to get elected. nobody can read it anyother way and be honest.

and i'm not a fan of mitt either.

Obama says "let the states decide, because they know what is best for their citizens."

Romney says "they can't be trusted to decide, so the Federal government will decide."

How does that jive with his "smaller Federal gov't" spiel?

Different states have different need. A one-size-fits-all approach is hamfisted and clumsy.
