Plus too parents aren't helping either. When little Jimmy doesn't make the grade, it's the teacher's fault, even if every other student in the class is excelling.
My mom is a middle school science teacher in tucson. You hit the nail on the head with this post. But she makes about 1/2 theses teachers in chicago do with a fucking masters in education and 35+ years of expierance. And if little jonny gets a b in 8th grade science. Mom and dad show up to contest that with their lawyer, since she is in the better part of town. That b might fuck jonny from getting a ivy legue education that mommy and daddy have planed out for him

Your mom makes less than $40k a year with 35+ years experience and a Master's?

I'm calling BS. Show me the AZ teacher pay scale.

OK is one of the lowest paid states in the Union, and it's not close to that low. The link below is to MINIMUM's.

Your mom is likely underpaid, most teachers are (you willing to raise taxes to pay them more ;) ), but exageration doesn't lend you any credibility.

            Teachers have class.

Most teachers in government schools are terrible. Very few are great. But 30 grand a year, for teaching simple math to small children, is generous. Not to mention, only 8 hours a day, and only 9 months out of the year. With tons of vacations. Plus tax-supported benefits, that few private companies can, or will, match. Get another job, if you don't like it. The teaching system stinks. I feel bad for the teachers who actually care. But, most don't care.
$30,000/year is approximately $15/hour for a 40 hour work week, with 2 weeks vacation.
Mostly what I hear from good teachers is, "THE PARENTS SUCK!"

He drives a e30 and a Dodge Dakota with 260k on the clock. Teachers here are not paid well enough at all. I'm friends with a few and it's the same story.

Sucks. Especially seeing what kids are like these days.
can probably thank the union for rewarding and paying based on seniority and cock sucking instead of instructor performance.

I said about 1/2 (76/2=38 :) ). Right at 41 or 42 and change I think. When she went down there for the job in 97 (not 35 years in with the same District, in general). Her 1st years pay was 19,9XX YEAH less than 20k (they didnt want to give her much credit for her years in MI, and she needed the job to be close to my grandparents), She had been taking CEC (continuing education credits) and gotten her masters in 00. Since about 04 they have been hiring fresh grads for much closer to the 30k mark, and now its close to 33k, with something like a 500 a year credit for experience only to go back 10 years, so if she hired in today she would be at about 38k.

                TUSD's pay rates

A touch better than OK. but 10 years ago AZ WAS the lowest paid teachers it nation.

you consistently amaze me with your stupid replies.

teachers should get paid more, have higher standards and greater personal disciplinary authority. (no corporeal punishment though.) teachers are the brokers to our countries future investment. this is the last place we can skimp.

So, your response to a system clearly fucking its employees is to say "fuck the unions that are trying to get them paid more"?

The city is looking to increase the length of the school year as well as adding 90 minutes to the school day while increasing class sizes. The previous two scheduled 4% raises were canceled, and the 16% raise is tied to a 4 year plan with a significantly reduced pension and much lower health coverage. It also changes how teachers are evaluated, basically throwing out seniority and experience and doing it primarily by standardized testing.

AKA, these "76k/year" teachers (masters degree with 15+ years experience) get to get tossed out for the younger crop of Bachelors degree and no experience teachers, which make about 46k/yr. Run that through a cost of living calculator and you're looking at about 38k/yr in Tucson as sleeve listed.

Also, they're changing the layoff/recall policy. In the past, if a teacher was laid off, they were put on a "recall" list, given priority when a position opens back up. Now they want to change that so that all positions which are laid off have to reapply for the job. Guess what? Your 70k job just became a 46k/yr job.

                    Pretty shady.

Where did I say that Charlie ??? I am at a loss, teachers is one place I think we should be paying more for.

Thing is the last 2 SPECIFIC raises that have been voted in TUSD, FOR TEACHERS have gone to NEW 6 figure a year administrative staff and diverted to other "necessary expenditures".

your dad should of known what he was getting into before he became a teacher, I'm sure if he wanted a high paying job he wouldn't of chose the route he did. I'm assuming he became a teacher for his passion of education, and if he's made any impact on his students, then I'm sure that to him is worth more than a pay raise.

Teachers consistently have the lowest entry scores to college and GPA's while in college. This notion that the "cream of the crop" is educating America's youth is laughable.

Should we pay them as much as Computer programmers and Engineers, when based on some of the news stories I've read, most of them aren't even capable of speaking proper English?

Most counties, the ones you would actually want to work in require a Masters in education to become a teacher. That's 7-8 years worth of school to start right there, for a position starting out at 35-40k. That's not a lot of money to deal with 120 kids and have your job security tied to the metric of a standardized test.

Sure, there are inner city shitholes, rural backwaters and teach for america that will hire you with just a bachelors, but most of those positions pay about 25-26k. You want to deal with the bullshit that a teacher works with for 12 bucks an hour?
