      Speaking of lavish lifestyles... look at the christian churches in Europe (where some of your ancestors come from). There was no private building, no gov building nearly as expensive to build and maintain as the churches. The only thing more lavish were the castles and fortifications for the ruling class, although maily as defence against others.
      So of course the bible shuns spending, because otherwise the church has nothing to ask of you. Especially when you killed someone and wanted to get pay off that sin instead of going to jail or getting you head cut off.
