So when you have a 105lb 68 year old woman whos home is being robed by 2 men in their early 20's at 6'2" and 210lbs how is that meek little woman expected to defend her self with out some kind of force equalizer????

I have no problem with the old lady blasting away in that situation. I trust she went through the proper channels to acquire a gun, as everyone should do (as I did - even though I thought it was silly). She exercised her natural right through a legally valid process.

Tell me more about these fake stories.

The problem with that source isn't where it comes from but the fact that it doesn't provide any information to evaluate the thing we're supposed to be getting outraged about.

It says that someone went to a medical practitioner for an undisclosed issue and took some undisclosed psychotropic medication. Do you know what those are? Here's a list:

so maybe he needed some mild sedative, maybe he needed something for some pain, or maybe he needed something because he was suffering from schizophrenia...we don't know. And it's not our right to know, that's the only real point of the article being that health information is private and protected and local law enforcement shouldn't just be automatically privy to it.

so that's a sticky situation. but on the other end of the spectrum, we know there are a whole boatload of untreated mental disorders among our US population. We know that most of the people in prison for violent crimes are suffering from untreated mental disorders. And we know that when people's brains aren't working at full capacity they tend to do crazy shit.

so the issue is really what to do about that problem. that problem of people walking around in society with untreated (serious) mental disorders owning/carrying/using loaded firearms. Now the guy is going to get a hearing to presumably determine his competency and assess his level of danger to himself and others.

now that's probably shitty to a lot of people but this is one of those times where you have to sit back and consider just where you want to go with society and our values and whatever else gets you hung up before you sleep at night. the reality is we live in a complex society with a lot of urban density and people don't, by and large, live on huge twenty acre plots of land anymore with no neighbors around them. people get depressed and suffer from things ranging from feeling like crap in the morning to full blown schizophrenia and some people have unfortunately harmed themselves and/or harmed others during their breakdowns.

but this piece of "news" is really only serving as an echo chamber. if you think it's a bad idea to take someone's weapons when they present mental disorders until they can be evaluated then you'll get outraged. if you think that it's generally a good idea to take someone's weapons when they present mental disorders then you'll likely see it as no big deal or possibly even a good thing. but the article itself doesn't really serve to provide adequate information to make a well informed opinion about what is or is not going on in NY in relation to gun ownership, protected health information, and what to do about gun rights.

That's the central problem I find with so-called gun debates is that bs pieces like the one cited that don't really give any information at all but are calls for people to get all incited about an issue and then you get people on both sides entrenched one way or the other and no rational discussion or resolution can be reached.


on a personal level, it confounds me how someone, some in this thread even, would sit here and rail on this guys "right" to own a gun even if he did go into a doctor's office with a narrative about how he lost his job, his wife is banging the neighbor, and maybe he should just end it...or maybe end her...and him. well who knows what the details are but it's not an unreasonable kind of state to find oneself in when the world falls apart around you. but meanwhile, some kid gets a possession charge for marijuana 20 years ago and some of you are perfectly fine with that now adult in his 40's not being able to ever own a firearm for personal protection of his home or go hunting with his family. so color me unimpressed with the whole "rights" brigade that comes marching out in these threads.
