The stans lack good radar coverage...transponders do fail from time to time and countries don't send up air intercepts if they had been in contact with ATC.

There is a few nice little Atolls in the Indian oceans that you could put a runway on.

777 is ETOPS so it can fly a decent amount of time on one engine. Lots of power on newer airframes. I have missed the last 5 days of news so bunch of new news to me.

Too many different theories. Can't throw out the two stolen passports either as just happened. Climb to 45k in a nice gradual climb with cabin pressure set improperly and you get Pane Stewart. Disable the cabin pressurization switches and the masks don't fall from the overhead compartments.

Clancy wrote Debt of Honor...few items like it come to mind. Who knows, will the general public be told the truth or hide it?

Lot loonies out there, lot of stuff we don't see or hear. Guess it depends on your clearance level. Not that I would subject loosing mine to publicly broadcasting classified info.

Just things that come to mind.

Oh noticed a few decent E30's for sale down in the Coco Beach area...Ah relaxation was nice.

It just mind boggling that a giant plane can just disappear.

            Another good post/point.

If there was foul play, why couldn't that have been the *intention*, i.e. making this event be a paradigm shift, just as Sept 11 was?

Prior to Sept 11, hijacks ended with landing & making demands. Which is what the Sept 11 hijackers indeed broadcast to the passengers and to ATC.* But they changed the paradigm, as we know, and those statements were active misinformation.

Why change the paradigm again? To sow the maximum amount of fear and uncertainty into commercial transportation -- make a modern first world jet appear to disappear into thin air, with no ability to find it. (Because whatever happened to it has happened somewhere *well away* from its last known position.) A crash is unsettling, but can be dealt with. A simple disappearance with nothing more -- no debris, no recorded crash, no demands, with everyone looking 1,000s of NM away -- would inflict maximum uncertainty. It already has inflicted a lot, but imagine how much more there would be if the pinging wasn't there, and especially if the pilot had evaded Malaysian radar?

That could be the aim itself. So a lack of any claim of responsibility may no longer be a pointer against foul play.

Remember, bin Laden's strike was symbolically at the three limbs of the USA - economic (4 planes + 2 towers); military (Pentagon); and political (intended target of UA93 was likely the Capitol). This could be a strike at one, the easiest to get to (economic).

            * United 93, which had the only CVR to survive, recorded the pax being told "Here's the captain. I would like to tell you all to remain seated. We have a bomb aboard, and we are going back to the airport, and we have our demands. So, please remain quiet." On AA 11, Atta told ATC "We have some planes. Just stay quiet, and you'll be O.K. We are returning to the airport."

I'll wait for someone to chime in, and I'm on a limb with this, but I'm guessing the US knows exactly what has happened via Diego Garcia. I'm sure the publicized abilities of the facility are far understated, and I'm sure there are more than a few guys in uniform that know a whole lot.

that was kinda my point with this

I think way more is known about all this than is being let on. A fucking 777 just does not disappear, there is radar data tracking it that someone has somewhere, with out a transponder its a little harder sure but a 777 has the cross section of a god dammed building someone knows where the thing is or where it fell out of the sky

^Fact of the matter in that direction is, if that's the case, what do they know, and what are they not releasing? I feel like this is a Clive Cussler novel. If they are not telling the true facts, I'm guessing it's to not give the specific threat any mileage.

Inmarsat downlink and uplink is probably the most surveilled band of every spy agency and .gov satellite operator in the world. There isn't a reason the data is so sparse aside from keeping something under the tablecloth until it's supposed to be released.

It's not off the wall to think that maybe the terrorist claim of responsibility has been made through other channels, and the .gov's are not releasing it, and the actors of this event will come out and show how bad they hide stuff.

                      Back to my transponder theory.

I'm finding that an off-the-shelf S Transponder can be re-hexcoded and clone (spoof as I said earlier) another aircraft. (They don't even have to swap them as I claimed earlier in this thread.)

Yeah, I never went that far. Lot of twists in that.

Kinda like the thwarted nuke thing in NC that is around on all the conspiracy sites a while ago. The MV Alabama thing is off the wall.

It's not a secret base. I spoke of it earlier in the thread... High tech base, secluded, but publicly accepted and known. 20 years ago, not so well documented, then it was a secret base.

EDIT: What gets me is we can track the boat that is going to look for the missing plane, in realtime, from a computer, whats up with planes not having anything like this? I understand the logistics and people saying why they don't, but still.
