So my 15 year old brother in law is a freshman in high school. Today they had a bomb threat called in, so the school was put into lockdown. I'm OK with that.

I just talked to him on the phone (we might as well be brothers by blood, I am 27, he's 15, and I treat him as if he were my own kid brother. I've known him since he was 7 or so). He told me that Police came into his classroom in tactical gear with submachine guns, and patted down every kid in the class.

I explained to him that he had been stripped of his rights in that situation and he should have refused, because HE did not call in the threats.

His response was that he felt it was COOL. COOL that police officers in full tactical loadout with submachine guns entered his classroom, and searched his person with no just cause.

My blood is boiling right now, and there is nothing I can do. Except keep reading this thread over and over again.

If my daughter came home from school with a similar story, I would be calling for the heads of whoever called for such an over reaction. Which would result in nothing happening whatsoever because such is the norm now.

I don't know if this is conditioning, or simply the chain of command is getting retarded, but I personally feel an evacuation would have been more than sufficient response.

For the record, I had bomb threats when I was in highschool.. Never was I subjected to such treatment, and yet I am still here breathing.

Now I am not going to get into whether this was handled as appropriately as it could have ...

however.. if something were to have happened, most people.. probably including you would be outraged saying oh well what did they do to prevent it.

As for being searched in school... well I always thought that was ridiculous but I remember in school there were random book bag / locker checks all the time for drugs / weapons. Yea even then I thought it was totally bullshet, but once you walk through those doors...

For threats of any kind though we were evacuated and put on lock down a few times.

calm down man....there was a bomb threat so the argument is pretty easy to make that there was probably cause. sometimes we as a society have to give up some rights for the safety of everyone. it sucks yes, but really.....

hell, i am an airline pilot. i am subject to search every flipping time i enter the secure area at an airport, every time i fly into a foreign country, and every time i fly back here to the usa. should i make the argument that since i am not carrying any illegal contraband, they should have no right to search me? i chose to work in this profession and in doing so, i choose to subject myself to this sort of thing. life goes on, the world will still be spinning tomorrow, and april 15 will still be the day my taxes are due.

I'm inclined to side with you that they likely did not need to pat down individual students, however the lockdown/detention which is entirely reasonable likely gave them authority to do so.

As for their dress state, irrelevant. Whether or not they're in dress uniforms or full "swat" gear they're in uniform, and they're much more prepared to function in the way in which they're described. Dramatizing the situation by inferring they're dressed too aggressively is just silly. They were their to deal with a potential bomb, not a school yard fight. Whether or not you had threats as a kid is also irrelevant.

When I had bomb threats they just told us to get out of the campus. No pat downs. There is a thing called compulsory education in this country so he can livid away. Another man touching your child without consent is a form of abuse no matter how benign you think the situation is.
