Fuck, I used to get so frustrated at you. Now? I would have your babies, dude. And I'm a baby making machine!
Having been through 2 large acquisitions at a relatively small company that then was eaten by a larger and then an even larger? I can tell you for a fact that this $15.00 minimum wage in Seattle is AMAZING. Why? Because that will translate across the board for a lot of people in other areas making more/less than the $15.00 proposal.
Anyone saying they don't want to see people flipping burgers to get $15.00? Fuck you. You flip burgers for $9.75. It's fucking work. "Oh, work harder" you say? You want to know what Lowe's Inc. told me when I busted my ass on the floor? "You work too well on the floor, sorry, you won't ever be moved onto management. We can't afford to lose you..." - "Oh really? What's my end game here in say 5 years?" - "Well, we can maybe get you to $12.00/hr by that time frame...". Did I leave and get a "better" job? Sure. But that's absolute garbage. Look at Lowe's profit margins.
Hard work in big box operations does not translate to bettering yourself.
Whether you know it or not you have just proven many of "our" points. A minimum wage is intended to keep you from working for free while gaining valuable work experience, building a reputation with those whom employ you, which translate to a favorable recommendation at your next employer = Bettering your self maybe. Though MOST IMPORTANT its a built in INCENTIVE to get the fuck out of it and make something of your self.

Yeah I read the "check your privilege" thing a few days ago.....
here how about we read Mr Fortgangs actual words and his actual editorial....
There is a phrase that floats around college campuses, Princeton being no exception, that threatens to strike down opinions without regard for their merits, but rather solely on the basis of the person that voiced them. “Check your privilege,” the saying goes, and I have been reprimanded by it several times this year. The phrase,
Seem as though your chosen editorial is from another Princeton student that is trying to play the race gambit and seems to embody the victim mentally even though she is a well positioned and accomplished student at a prestigious university, I can only wonder if AA helped her gain admission to such a selective school like it did for one of our newly minted SCOTUS judges???
Ironic post is full of Irony, seems that a Student that may have had her race (and likely gender) to her advantage, to help her gain admission to such a selective university should have any pedestal to perch on, to debase someone for not apologizing for the circumstances of their own birth, while at the same time embracing her own privileges is a bit short sighted and just maybe a little stereotypical, dont you think..... Talk about wearing blinders...
this is a little dated

I'm white in Asia. I use my race as an advantage all the time. It works.
As for the author - good on those who use whatever they can to get ahead. White people invented gaming the system and then whine about it when others do the same.2011 1M Alpine white/black

No one says that flipping burgers is not work, When I was in H/S I was a dishwasher and line cook when I was not at the farm, or working construction in the summer or in the shop. Oh and I did those restaurant jobs for 4.35 - 5.15 an hour and was happy to do it in the winter time when I had school too be at most of a typical work day.

Even by the statistics you posted on the last page, the jobs that pay min wage are clearly not just for people 'starting out' in the labor force.
A minimum wage is nothing more than the government establishing a price floor for labor. That's it. There' s no need to moralize it, argue about it being 'unfair' that people will be paid more than they deserve or demonize people for wanting to earn enough to not live in poverty.Comment

Sleeve, I went to make myself a negroni and I was wondering, for the life of me, what the point of your post was?
What's so bad if that broad used race to get into Princeton? Based solely on what she wrote she seems bright enough (and Princeton isn't all its cracked up to be, let me tell you). Shouldn't minorities who have had systematic discrimination their entire American existence be afforded a chance to prove themselves? Or, do you think all minorities are unintelligent and lazy and deserve to be kept down? Should all the Irish have been kept in Southie or working on construction sites? Should women continue to be paid 77 cents on the dollar for the same work as a guy? Probably not.
This country was built on two things - white ascendancy and empowering the less fortunate. There is nothing new in a poor minority being given a chance to make something of herself. An Irishman took the White House. Later, a black man did. Sounds like we're fulfilling what we preach, no?
Please, for God's sake, tell me what the problem is pointing out that the system favors certain groups to the exclusion of others?
This is a damn good negroni. The secret is in the vermouth.2011 1M Alpine white/black

Still fucking that chicken I see. I dont think most of us making any of the arguments aginst are anywhere near ending up tied for the last spot in the competition

All the political bickering on the national stage is pretty silly then, since this effects very few people and does nothing for the majority of people who (rightly or wrongly) call themselves middle class. I guess advocating for an increase in the EITC is a lot less sexy for the democrats.

Looking at a business like McDonalds, it may not effect MCD's corporately owned stores, but it will hurt franchisees. MCD franchisees were "revolting" last summer increases in rental costs (MCD is real estate company more so than a burger company), forced remodels, the dollar menu and other issues. These price increases on the franchisee's are much of the reason why MCD stock has been doing quite well in recent years as they have pushed more of their costs onto the franchisee lowering the franchisee's profits, but not corporate. Not everyone can see the difference between the two.Comment

kinda like pushing costs onto employees so the corporation gets richer while everyone else gets poorer.Comment

Bumping this.
Had dinner with my mom and brother last night and saw this on the news. Mind you my family is mostly liberal on almost every issue, so I did a little prodding: "Profits (or losses) staying equal, with increased costs of production, comes increased costs of goods (or services). Just like the minimum wage argument." I saw the airline example as a direct cause and effect.
My brother, an accountant, couldn't disagree more. Paraphrasing: "Companies will find new efficiencies to offset the labor costs, and that labor force will be putting more money into the economy, it's a win-win."
My counter-argument was that those efficiencies would likely be automating or eliminating jobs, and the spending power of the increased minimum wage will eventually be offset by the increased cost of goods if companies don't "find new efficiencies".
I figured I would find a thread on here arguing both sides of the issue and it is interesting to see everyone's perspective.
Regarding the Federal Minimum Wage increase being proposed, I feel this is ultimately more of a political issue rather than an economic one. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that increasing the Federal Minimum Wage will raise 900,000 workers above the poverty level, at the expense of 500,000 jobs. We all know how markets react to job loss reports. It's an election year (isn't it always?), so each party is taking a position on legislation that gets the attention of it's constituents to get reelected.
I earned minimum wage once, just like everyone else. Not a chance I would consider it a living wage, but I know people who get by on it and are quick to offer a buck. I also know people with a six figure household income who are "struggling" and can't even find money to contribute to their retirement plan.
