The US has shot down commercial airlines too, it happens. The interesting part this time is that it was apparently Russian funded separatists. (dont quote me on it, lots of bullshit going around).

Yup, US Navy shot down Iran Air 655 in 1988. It was broadcasting civilian signals and everything, but the guys on the ship got antsy and ended 290 innocent lives.

Today's tragedy looks like a similar event. Ukraine claims that it has no SAMs in that region. If it was the seprartists/rebels, the only way that they could have gotten a hold of a Russian Buk missile system is through Russia. This is a big mess, and I really really hope that it does not serve to escalate the Ukraine troubles into a wide-reaching international conflict. People need to keep cool heads, now more than ever.
