a 21+ for sales. I'm not a smoker but for those that are or might become one would this deter you?

Do you know anyone that was deterred by the 21+ drinking age?

On the same people who have their 21+ year old friends buy them cigarettes?

I doubt Louisiana lost tax revenue on alcohol sales when the age went from 18 to 21.

It will make it harder for kids to get cigs, just because underage HS aged kids have other HS aged friends, some of who will be 18 (sophomores who are friends with seniors, etc). Very, very few HS kids have friends who are juniors in college...

The question is, how much harder? It won't stop underage smoking, but it will have some impact.

IF you KNEW you stood a very, very good chance of getting cancer, would you even start?

Actually, IF you could see yourself with the actual disease, would you start?

this is a valid point though not the point I was making. I was not really talking about the revenue of sales to those 18-20. I was talking more long term, as this legislation is designed to get people to not start at all, and if successful will lower the amount of revenue coming in from this particular sin tax for ever, just not losing a small portion of it.

Not to mention with the bulk of the smoking population getting older and fewer people starting to begin with they are going to have to look to replacing the income soon anyway. besides it was mostly a tongue in cheek statement to poke fun at one of the highest sin taxed items on the market in one of (if not the (too lazy to look it up)) highest sin tax rates in the country in one of top (5ish?????) highest taxed and yet "brokest" states in the union...

Because it just increases your chance, it doesn't guarantee it.

My dad is 63, he has been smoking for 50 years. What's killing him? His liver.

Not to mention, do you know how cool you look when you smoke? Have you never watched a movie?

Sorry to hear about your dad. Yeah, I rant. I work in a cancer center. It sux when cigs are the cause of either cancer or COPD. To me a 50% or less chance of a debilitating or life threatening disease is enough of a deterrent.

It is like the TV ads for meds. "May cause, renal failure, heart failure, cancer..." I would probably have to pass.
