hehehe, gotta love the e30 on track days!

I spent yesterday at Spring mountain motorsports ranch in Pahrump NV. At one point I was coming back to my car from checking the lap times and I found 2 guys looking at/under my car. They asked me if it was my car and were wondering what the hell I had done to my 318 to make it so damn fast :)
They were in a stock '98 M3 and were confused when I "dissapeared" out on the track.
I luv the 318is! The only time I felt I needed more power was when assholes in "slow" high HP cars wouldnt let me pass on the straights. I would just get stuck behind them again in the corners.

That's funny I might be organizing a track day there....

That's pretty funny when guys do that.
I hate slow drivers that don't let you pass on the straight. That's what the corner workers are there for. How about a passing flag please!!

You pass a lot of cars in the novice groups when you have an e30. The fact that they have no power makes them easy to drive compared to a 300+ hp car when you're nervous out there on track.

Once you get into the higher groups however, where the people with big HP cars actually know how to drive them, you start wearing your left arm out giving point bys.

      E30's are slow.

and the m42 is slower then modded m10s, stock m20s, which are slower than m50s, and those are slower then s50s and those are slower and so on and so on... the e30s just suck, and especially the 318is

no matter what you do you must nail every corner to keep a faster car in sight on a straight

Actually if someone wanted to do it right you CAN get some pretty impressive performance out of the M42. Start with the cam timing, switch out the dual mass ( A.K.A. heavier then crap ) fly wheel, loose the tar and let loose with the bottle neck exhaust and bam! Your lighter and quicker then most 325 owners that don't know how to drive......

Um, so you finagle with the cam timing and gain 4 hp. There's no tar to lose in the 318's, and you're still way down on torque to a stock M20.

Turn in is probaby nicer, out of the turn the M20 car is gonna pull you though.

                And that tar would be?

Damn sure not in the trunk, good bit less in the interior of the car.

                    M20 > M42

M20 has torque, so you can power out of the low speed corners better than the M42, and you have to shift less to keep the power on boil. Just my experience with my car vs. Ryan's (Slowered318) at Shannonville, where light nimble cars are at a supreme advantage.

And yeah, I had lots of people wondering "how many turbos that that thing have mang?" I simply said 6, one for each cylinder :D

                      e30s are cheap though

there was a 18yo girl driving a 318is at Bluegrass driving school. i wanted to propose. . . to have the buttsexors, that is

                      m20 track rats rock.

learn to drive, then buy an e36 m3

the driver of the m3 couldn't obviously

318iS can be a fun on the track. You just need to wring it out (read: shift a bit) and not be afraid to carry some cornering speed.

sure you could spend some cash, play w/ tuning, MAF,AFM,s50 m50 blah blah.. spend more cash and wax your butt hair BUT........

THEY ARE KINDA SLOW in general. BUT they are great cars and when set up well they are just a fun track rat that lets you sharpen your driving skills all day long w/o biting you back. But I dont pass many equally driven cars on the track w/ more hp.......

I love sitting down and just driving!

                            Doesn't that go without saying?
It's a great car for the cost and that's all that matters really.

The m42 is sufficient. An m20 would beat it no problem, but itd be pretty sad if it didnt right? The benefit of the 318is is in the handling of the car. The car just feels right no matter what you throw at it. Makes for great fun. Would I like more power, sure, but the tossability of the car is incredible.
