no interior, minus dash, no ac, sound deadening removal in interior, smaller battery, fiberglass seat, got rid of the cast pieces around the steering column, there actually is some weight there... we just integrated the column in with the cage and some heim joints. side exit exhaust, we had about an 8lb pipe after the collector, as opposed to cats and mufflers heatsheilds etc... insides of dash are mostly gutted as well, although we had to keep the heater core per rules... Just a lot of parts that replaced the stock parts as well provided in weight loss here and there, we run basketweaves and v710s, but are also looking at racing dynamics wheels this winter that weigh in at about 13lbs' for a 15" wheel. start adding up all the interior goodies etc and you lose a good bulk. We added a muffler and rear exit exhaust which stole some of our weight. I figured we would be over weight the first time it ran across the scales, and was quite amazed at how light the car was even with our 1.75 cage, when other IT cars are running 1.5... If I had a picture of the read out on the scale I would post it... but thats what we weigh, and thats that...
its pretty easy to get a car down on that initial lash of parts pulling...
its after that where your composites and interesting metal choices come into place...
oh and we cant forget, not using air in the tires is always lighter... :) more consistant tire pressure as well
Are you sure about the weight of the RD wheels? I had a set of polished 5 spoke 15s and they weighed a ton. I am thinking 16 lbs. or so. I sold them a while back, so can't weigh one now.

nitrogen cant really make enough difference to mention...

he meant Team Dynamics wheels. i have a set, they weigh 13lbs, and with R-compounds mounted they are suprisingly light weight.

FRONT VALENCE IS ZENDER!!! STOP FILLING MY PM BOX PPL!!!
thanks for the reply. Listed some great information. I knew that to get the car down to <2200 lbs extreme measure would have to be taken. The only other sub 2200 318is I knew off was Alex Broosseau's (Canadian BMWCCA Club Racer Extraodinaire) former 318. That car was gutted to the max, including removal of trunk lid and hood supporting braces. A funny detail was that he used a big hose clamp to mount the ECU to his roll cage front cross member.
His 318 also had some interesting motorwork IIRC , Hybrid M42 that was close to 200 HP. Before he sold his car, he swapped in a S50 or 52.
For your class, are you still running the stock fuel tank or do your class rules mandate a fuel cell?
Keep us updated on your track exlploits.
Out of curiosity, do you have any in car video? Im curious to see and hear from the inside.
no track video, we were strapped for cash bad going into the last two races of the season (our first two) so other things obvioulsy over-ruled the camera idea. However it is something I want to do.
Stock tank, The newer cars have the better pump, and tank setup so starvation isn't an issue... The old chassis, and the e36's suffer from starvation bad and usually a cell is the best route to go with those. We can however use a cell but it just wasn't in the budget... We usually run with about 4-5 gallons tops...
interesting. I have had starvation issues in my '91 when I get below 1/4 tank.
same here! had it with the old chassis on cloverleaf interchanges. In some extream cases its because these tanks did not have baffles and all the gas was sloshing to one side. In my car, the fuel pump filter was not attached to the pump, which was allowing it swing free in the tank

supposedly there is a part that keeps the intake boot expanded as well...
I guess the boot contracts right after a shift when going back to WOT... creating a momentary power loss... I thought that was interesting we havent had a problem with this BMW part number slips my mind but can be found on some m42 site
no, Im pretty sure it is a fuel starvation issue. It only happens below 1/4 tank and the yellow loght will come on afterwards. I had the issue only on one very fast, long sweeper.
