I don't use rope or compressed air. I just bring each cylinder pair so that one is at TDC. At that point the valve has a maximum of a few millimeters to fall.
It used to be a cheap job, when you could get a set of 24 spring plates and 48 split collet retainers for around $110.
Now the same parts are around $300, IIRC.
