    Slapdash Racing [nearly] finishes NEFR

    Hey,

So we almost made it again at this year's New England Forest Rally. We had a nearly race-ending off that bashed in the front right control arm (enough so the tires were pointing toward each other) about halfway into a 9-mile stage. After the car went off the road into the woods, it was still running, so I stomped on the gas and honey-badgered out of there. A looooong four miles of slow stage and a longer 10+ mile transit back to service found us hot, tired and frustrated, but not done.

Wild Bill Doyle, of cagethis.com, my co-driver for the event, ripped the control arm off in service and bashed it back to straight with a BFH and we were on our way. We completed another 9-mile stage, but suffered a flat on a transit, then the spare was flat as well. Then, as we rolled up to the start line, the radiator blew. We were seven miles from the finish of a 2-day, 90-mile event.

    We still had fun though.

Send all Lemfoerder control arms, radiators and tires to Slapdash Racing so we can compete in Rally Delaware, a tarmac event in upstate New York.

Photo courtesy of Pete Kuncis, of onalimbracing.com (check out his stuff, it's awesome!).

    Cheers,

wow that sounds like a blast!

What are you going to do to reinforce the front control arms? They seem like a common weak point.

      Awesome shot.

Where are you guys located? I'll be driving from NYC to MA later this month and have a set of used but good control arms I'd dedicate to the cause. Would love to drop em off and shoot the sht for a bit.

Ha ha, they are a common weak point, especially when you smash them into a wall of trees, gravel and rocks (all at once) at 50 mph. Haven't really thought about reinforcement, but any ideas?

FLG, we're in Cranston, RI, but the car is currently in Lynn, MA at my sponsor's joint (Bill Doyle, of cagethis.com).

Stop by anytime. I appreciate the offer. If nothing else, I can shoot the sht!

Sweet. My other car is getting fixed up at a shop in Halifax ma (73 charger) and all my chassis work is done by Jon Sandall at tube chassis designz.

If your gonna be in RI later this month I'll stop in and give ya a set of arms...literally on the way to Halifax...Lynn is about an hour more north.

                FLG, sounds great!

Tim, we always need crew. Next event is a tarmac affair in upstate New York, Rally Delaware (Delaware County).

No build thread yet on the car, but have something in the works...

                  Kris,

Bummer on the last race, good luck with the tarmac. I still am rather blown away by the amount of work that went into that cage. Was it the ball-joints that went kablooie or the arm itself?

What are you guys running for motor mounts/ suspension bushings?

Thanks Andrew. The control arms were brand-new last year, but when you smash them into a wall of rocks, dirt, trees, a ditch and other stuff, they bend up pretty quick. I estimate I had my "off" at 40-50 mph sideways. A normally straight CA, was U-shaped pretty quick.

Doyle monkey-fisted back at service though and BFHed it back to straight in no time.

The cage is definitely intense and there were a few examples of his work at NEFR as well.

Motor and trans mounts are Ireland Engineering, of course, with springs and sways up next.

How did the arms bend? Vertically or horizontally? You could weld a bar between the hub mount and the frame rail mount, but that would limit your turning circle, which I would assume is important in rallying. lol
