I'd like put a 5 gallon fuel cell in my trunk and get rid of the regular tank. Can anyone suggest one that has worked well for them? Also what fuel pump did you use?

The walbro 255 is, from what others have told me, the go-to pump if you want to up the delivery power in your E30.
I have no experience with fuel cells, but try to find one that will fit in the spare tire well, to move the weight of the fuel a little closer to the ground. My previous build (currently E30-less)

I mean, how big of a difference does it make to have the cell higher up than stock? also further back from stock location..? I have read that some people prefer stock tanks because of the nice location..

Yes, the stock location is ideal fro keeping your CG low. That being said, if you are thinking of doing enduro's ever, a fuel cell is the way to go.. We ran a spare tire cell in an eta at the Thunderhill 25hr, and while it wasn't the fastest setup, it was faster than a stock tank load (save for the spill penalties..) If you are doing any sort of racing (short of drag racing) I would say go for 10 gallon cell at the minimum.1991 325i MT2 Touring (JDM bro)

The rear fenders are unmodified but the springs have been changed to 800 lbs so the car can't lean into the tires.
The front fenders have be enlarged about an inch and a half on both the front and the rear edges. The front bumper has been spaced forward about an inch for clearance.Richard

Guys it's a dedicated autoX car lol. Poke happens and 10-12 gallon cell isn't very necessary. IMO trying to use the stock location would be best because (A) it's low to the ground, and (B) moving it back to the trunk shifts weight outside of the wheelbase, which is something I would definitely avoid. That said, mounting it in the trunk will be much easier.
Richard, care to give us any more details on your car? Full suspension setup? I'm assuming engine swap since your running in SM? We have a couple other guys on here who are (or have) run DSP as well as SM, definitely some good info out there, may have to search a bit to find it though.

The car is a 91 318is. The engine is a 95 M3 with a ZF 5 speed. The suspension is pretty much all Ireland Engineering.... camber plates, coil overs, Bilsteins.... The springs are something like 750 in the front and 850 in the rear.... I'd have to look to remember what they are exactly, but that's pretty close. I haven't done the toe-in and camber adjustment in the rear because I can't lower the car that much with the tires sticking out.
I'm building the next car right now (89 325is) and improving on all the things I'd like to change on this car. I've already installed an S52 converted to OBDI for more power, and the fenders will be radically chopped up to get the car as low as I can. I think a 3 gallon plastic tank in the trunk will be an improvement even though it moves a little weight to the back . Currently the car leans out in right sweepers if the tank is less than 3 quarters full so I'll probably be dropping 70 lbs or so by going to the smaller tank. Also, the next car will run in a prepared class, so all of the glass and interior will be pulled. The hubs will be converted to 5 lug and I will try to run some Z06 wheels that I have that are good for 295s in the front and 315s in the rear. Everything I have read says you can use the chevy wheels on BMW 5 lugs, but if not, I'll have Spin Werkes make some more wheels for me.Richard

Not sure what you mean by losing turn in.... Drivers who try my car out usually end up taking out the first slalom cones until they get used to how quick the car turns.Richard

not surprising with that much spring in back- yeah, I found that the 22x9.5 Goodyear cantilevers
made the 2002 something much more responsive than a go- kart...
What it DOES kill is top speed, from all the rolling resistance and drag.
Which matter not at all to autocrossers.
However, the lap to get temperature would be a much bigger issue.
tnow, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves
