...metal shavings from the tray being clearance from the crank had found their way to the oil pump and the gears had seen better day.
Ouch! Kevin from crank scrapers did warned me about the clearance, he told me at least 1 mm of clearance is required and that I should remove any excess material with a Dremel.

If I was set on buying one, it would be a telfon tray.
Good advice, they told me that for race applications that's the best option. I don't know if I am too cheap or too dumb hehe but I bought the steel one, anyway my E30 is a DD with occasional track day use. :D

What are your thoughts on using the oil pan baffle/tray from ireland engineering?

Yeah, when you rotate the crank you shouldn't hear it dragging on anything. I had to clearance mine quite a bit to work with the 2.8L crank.

Except for a teflon lined crank scraper, fitting of the scraper to the engine is mandatory. That means gauging the clearance (1mm is perfect) between the crank and the scraper at every point and at every extreme of positioning of the scraper. Doing this with the engine in the car is darn near impossible. But it is pretty easy (though time consuming) to do with the engine upside down on an engine stand.

Plain baffles in the pan help, but a "mousetrap" equipped box around the pickup and an extended pan in conjunction with a scraper are the real solution.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I have used crank scrapers on a couple of M42's and a s50 with no problems. Coupled with a windage tray and your good to go.

I just rebuilt my engine recently and installed an IE scraper. Fitment was great, I didn't have any interference issues at all. Currently have about 1k on the motor including one auto x event. Nothing in oil, no noises, very happy with it.

Lower pan baffle and 1/3 of a quart over full.

def buy a ishihara teflon crank scraper.. they fit alot better than the cheaper ones and get the teflon one.. spend the extra coin, its really not much in the scheme of things. Then you can run it pretty much on the crank, its safe and it does the job properly.

I looked into scrapers for a while, ishihara's are the best. Wont hurt putting in a sump baffle in the process. Just one of the IE ones is fine.

The sump baffle's important. I had to grind the IE one quite a bit to get it to fit.

The crank scraper's not a bad idea. But not critical.

If you're worried about oil starvation, consider installing an Accusump from Canton Racing Products. The complete set-up isn't much more than $300.

According to the folks at Canton, a 3-liter Accusump can keep an M20 with zero oil pressure running at full-throttle for ~90 seconds.

The baffle fit fine for me. I had the engine on the stand so i was able to tape it in place on the pan before mounting it to ensure the position i had it in would fit over the oil pump.

The windage tray is not as nice. It was much too long in the rear, and rubbed on the back of the flywheel. Needed a lot of grinding to make it fit right.

Really for the money it all worked fine, but honestly i cant imagine doing this while the motor is in the car, there was a lot of "shit now that side off, fix, now the other side is off." Probably doable just need patience.
