Is there not also a structural difference between an R888 and say an RS3?

    but you can't really run a 225 on a 7.

Just saw these Kosei's on tire rack K4R for 149$ more than the C1 but both are 15x8 and the Kosei's weight only 13.1 lbs...

If budget is an issue, RS3. If you want a similar but better RS3 and are willing to pay for it, Rival.

Kumho XS could also be good, but not too many folks seem to run them. Bridgestone's new RE11A and Dunlop's Z2 are also great contenders.
The Kumho XS is a great tire in the dry. Outright grip is superb, although response is just a little sloppy.

They are, however, one of the absolute worst tires that I have ever driven on in the wet. I have never driven on any tire with a greater delta between wet and dry performance. Not recommended.

I didn't like my XS. Too numb. I'd choose between Z2s and Rivals.

I am waffling on the 225 v. 205 given the sidewall rigidity benefits of the 205 on an x8 versus the generally wider contact patch of the 225.

TR wouldn't promise that they could mount the 205 on an x8 TR C1 wheel but said that they'd try.
205 may feel a bit more responsive, but 225s will be faster. That said, i's not tough to mount a 205 on an 8, it'll be fine.

They told me the same thing when I had them mount some 245s on a 9" TRM wheel for my old Subaru but a few days later they were sitting outside my garage door waiting for me. I don't think they like to do it since they like to CYA but it's easy enough for them to do.

I would go with 15x9 with 225/45/15 tires, if staying with 15 inch wheel. Should be a faster combo than 15x8 with 205 tires.

With BFG Rival coming out, there are more 225 options to pick. RS3, Rival, R1R (not recommended).

C1 in black works fine depending on car and purpose. I present my sig pic as evidence. Chrome would look like shiet on my externally beat up lachssilber car :)

That size is the go to in the Miata world, so I wouldn't worry about it being "too much" tire on an E30.

    TRM C1s!

Also comes in silver and anthracite. At $104/wheel I don't think you can beat the value/weight/width combo.
