    First time drifter advice.

I signed up for a local drift day on the 22nd of June and I'm pretty nervous that I'm going to go out there, suck it up, and get in everyone's way. So I was looking for a little advice before I dive in.

The car is 318is with a stock m42, on billy sports and h&r race. I'm going to work on my e-brake. Right now it will lock the wheels in a turn but only at the very top of its stroke with a hard yank. I've got new trans mounts on the way but other than that the car should be pretty much ready, or as ready as it is going to be.

I've only gotten the car sideways a handle of times. I don't really have a place locally that I am comfortable practicing before I get to the event so I will most likely be going cold turkey.

Any advice I need to hear before I get out there?

Practice more, if that is at all possible in your area or surrounding areas.

Your rears are disk? Stop yanking the stock e brake. Your gonna stretch/brake the cables or sheer the pads off if your rears. Plus in all honestly your probably not gonna use it much on your first time.

Your lsd rear in decent shape? How many miles?

Gonna take a lot to really throw that car sideways with that motor.

      Just have fun.

When I first started the best thing to do is find a wide open parking lot and put a cone or something in the middle and practice drifting circles around it until you can get very tight.

weight transfer skills will be your friend. That was the only way I could even get my m42 to get the car to even think about going sideways in any gear other than 1st

The rears are disks yes. The guy I've done ride alongs with has the same car and rips his ebrake to break traction and then powers over. Will it really cause that much damage? I've only really done it once this weekend to see if it would.

Unfortunately I haven't found a place locally where I can safetly practice with out having to worry about traffic or cops

Yes, the stock e brake is pretty crappy for this type of use. Cable will stretch or you can sheer the brake pad off its shoe, locking a wheel. Go hydro if you plan on getting serious.

Look around for empty lots in industrial areas. Then even if cops come. Generally they're more lenient if your not bothering people or endangering anyone.

Definitely a long way from going hydro. I'm mainly just going out there to have fun and see what the car and I can do. I have a feeling I may get addicted. But as of right now it's just a dd.

I'm considering coming out for the same event, though probably as a spectator and bringing my helmet for some ride alongs. I don't have tires (or money for them) at the moment.

55-60 psi in rear tires + Scandinavian flick is all you need. I've been drifting for years with no ebrake. just go out and have fun. its all about getting the feel of how the back end swings out and learning the timing of counter-steer. with the m42 you can pretty much keep it floored the entire time and just worry about steering.

momentum, the scandinavian flick and the shittiest rear tires you can find.

Yep its gonna be addictive. Then you'll want more power and less psi and faster drifts... Start saving up now.

                            this x2

Also run stock 195s with the m42. dont under estimate a well kept m42. You can have a great time drifting on the little power it makes. Its all about momentum and basically never letting off.

                            never lift brah.

                              I lifted once...

Car was fine Btw I hit some squishy tires (water was from rain buildup in the tires)
