and the shittiest rear tires you can find.
I got that covered. I'm gonna use the tires and wheels that came on my car when I bought it. Not one matches another. I've got a pirelli, a tiger paw, a uniroyal, and a continental. haha. Only thing is I'm sort of worried about one of them blowing cause there is some slight dry rot cracking. But oh well.

55-60 psi in rear tires + Scandinavian flick is all you need. I've been drifting for years with no ebrake. just go out and have fun. its all about getting the feel of how the back end swings out and learning the timing of counter-steer. with the m42 you can pretty much keep it floored the entire time and just worry about steering.
Preciate the solid advice guys. I have never heard of the over-inflation thing so I'm glad you told me.

personal experience on your E30? pictures?

I've done two events at the balcony in willow springs and about 10 practice nights at my local kart track. factory e brake works fine as long as I tighten it every so often.

Almost, and i rarely puled my ebrake for drifting. I just wanted to change the rear shoes and stuff cause they were old, one was half off its backing plate, luckily i caught it in time.

The stock e brake is just not a good design for drifting, not to mention the lock mechanism could be a pain in the ass if you accidentally bump your thumb off it while initiating and it stays stuck upwards.

OP, make sure you use some good front tires.

I have this odd feeling you're not clutching in when pulling the ebrake.

Just go have fun. We all start somewhere.
You'll soon understand how the car behaves and progress from there.

go practice on dirt/gravel to get the feel for the car's balance. It'll obviously take more work to break it free on tarmac, but car control is car control, and doing it on a loose surface will let you get the hang of a flick and countersteer more easily. Then you'll have to do it more aggressively on tarmac. Plus, on a gravel/open dirt area there's less to hit than on a public road.

And get some really crappy rear tires.....

This^ means everything. To me the idea of drifting a 318i is kinda dangerous unless its wet out just cause you will have to throw the car so violently trying to get it to slide that you will have little controll when it does break loose.

Anyways, turn in just slightly, clutch in stomp brakes, clutch out(should break loose at this point) full throttle, steer. When it tries to stop drifting turn in more .

Think a clutch kick in 2nd will work for the 318is?

it can be done. it all depends on entry speed. As far as the ebrake goes Ive never broken one. Remove the spring in the ebrake handle button so it wont stick on, change out the ebrake shoes with new ones and make sure you keep it adjusted properly. There is no need to yank the ebrake super hard or beat on it to make it lock up the rear and initiate a slide. A properly cared for stock ebrake will work just fine if you are a beginner.

Well, we can learn together then. I'm thinking about making a student driver magnet to put on the car.

I've never gone to any official drift events but when i'm running late for work..
there's always these two corners heading to work that i slide through in my m42. i just go steer into the turn more and then punch it in 1/3 into the turn then correct the steering going out of it. i have 205/40/16 tires, open diff, fairly decent thread, and my rear wheels have a bit of camber. No ebrake or clutch kicking.. i just steer and throttle.

I dunno if that's considered drifting but it makes my tires do the krrkrrrrr noise. lol but i wanna learn too.

You can absolutely drift in second gear. Dont worry you will have a blast out there. I honestly wouldnt worry to much about ebraking. That is just more moving and going to cause you more pain than reward. Even if you have a open diff you should absolutely still go and go whip your car around.

I haven't looked at the tag on the diff but I believe it is a LSD 4:10. I did a hard launch in a parking lot once and left two equal skid marks. So I have always assumed that meant it was an LSD. Its got LSD specific fluid in it haha.

As far as the e-brake, I am going to attempt to just do it by weight transfer and then probably try clutch kick. I'll try and not use the break if I can.

You need an m30 or a v8...it takes a bit to keep a slide in an m42. My brother's e30 does not really like to slide. Granted it is a vert. But my stripped out m30 will shred tire allllllllll day.
