Taper pad wear with Girling calipers

so the last set of front DTC 60's had terrrible taper wear- way worse than the
previous 2 sets of Hawk Blues did.

Other than changing the guide pins, is there anything else I could do to
the calipers and carriers to get taper wear down? I hate having to rotate
pads, but I hate even worse to have to throw half a set of pads away...

In measuring the spare carriers, I discovered that one pin is a
significantly tighter fit than the other- apparently by design. The pins
are a bit (.05mm) shy of 8.5mm, and one guide hole is 8.50 mm.
The other is 8.7mm. This is consistent across 4 carriers. Near as
I could guess, it's to reduce binding. I'm almost tempted to sleeve a set
to 8.50mm on both, and see if it works.

Because race car.... and yes, it WOULD be cheating, of course.

You can switch out the rubber guide bushings for brass ones, according to people. I have a set like that, but the one time we ran them on track we had a lot of front brake locking issues.. I fear they may cause the thing to bind.

The Girlings are very different than the ATE's that have rubber bushings-

the Girling runs an 8.5mm pin inside the casting of the carrier, and just
uses a wad of grease to prevent wear.

I wonder if opening up the clearance on ONE ATE brass bushing
(to make it like the Girlings) would reduce binding- I've heard stories
from those running the brass bushings that they've had binding
      problems too...

Yeah, I am talking about girlings. I have a set of girlings with brass bushings. I'll snap a pic next week.

Oh, wacko- yes, please, a bushing pic might explain what I'm missing.

          Thanks!

I've never seen a brass bushing setup for Girlings. I'm curious to see what the setup is.

weird. Used to run brass bushings front and rear and never had locking issues. Made sure to lube em up every time I had a wheel off the car and sometimes just for fun though.

of course I ran them on the vastly superiour E36 M3 and not an E30.

                    Toby,

I have rebuilt ATE calipers in stock. I'd suggest changing over.

                      Why, Kevin?

What advantage do the ATEs have over the Girling design?

                        Toby,

Less caliper flex and more even pad wear.

Well, I'll admit that the Girlings are pretty bad for taper wear...

...smaller pins might account for a lot of that, huh?

I upgraded to Ate calipers with the brass guides, and improvements have been modest at best. I'd say it's worth a shot, though. Just go to RX7 or Willwood stuff unless you're running SpecE30.
