Huh. I've run the stock flattops to 8k, and the E12's for seasons.

I had exactly this happen to me once in my 87 325i while on the freeway about 15 miles north of San Francisco. It was really intense. Luckily didn't get impaled, though close. Taught me not to buy a $1,500 E30 again.
