no doubt - and the bitch of it is, there are a handful of instructors that the CCA people use that are pretty timid as well. I had one once who wanted me to brake about 200 feet earlier than I wanted to coming down the back stretch at MO. Then I rode a session with her in her e46 ZHP, and I saw why. I was reaching much higher speeds than her in my 185k mile M20 shit can.

I can appreciate the first session or two where she doesn't know me and my abilities or lack thereof, but after I was turning good consistent laps and getting pointed by by people in e36 Ms, e39 540i/6, corvette, I would have liked to stop hearing her scream "brake brake brake" so fucking early.

Its not like I ever had any issues exiting that straight.

    Oh well.

I've also had a couple of kick ass instructors at CCA events as well.

Still beats a weekend cleaning out gutters or mowing the grass.

Dave, I know what you mean. I've never been stuck with such an instructor - I've always told them by the middle of the day, after I have the track down, I'm going to threshold brake and find the best braking point. And, with that, I'll start carrying more speed as I stay on it longer cause I am slowly but surely finding that perfect balance between braking point and entrance speed.

There was a guy at Motorsport Ranch that was in this really supppped up e46 M3. And, when I got moved up to advanced on my last two runs, on my very last run - I was hanging with my dad the entire time. And we got stuck behind him, and he wouldn't let us by! So sometimes...you just got those people that are really out there for a sunday cruise. lol

I've been fortunate not to have any pansy instructors: all moved me progressively along pretty well and asked what I wanted to work on, outside of October 05 when the gang was all there. I had someone who just wanted to write me off and do his own thing... but I found a Spec Miata guy who pushed me to carry MORE MORE MORE SPEED and BRAKE LATER! And I found the car and myself capable of more speed than I thought.

Even though sometimes the line got a little liberal.
If you go NASA, find a Miata guy - they are nuts and will make you faster.

I was lucky enough to have good BMW instructors who could work on my smoothness and looking ahead to the Apex to help float my car towards it. My issue now is to work on braking and braking markers instead of doing it on routine/feel/groove.

The locals (Hoosiers) were talking about Buckeye guys as being good and respectable to be among them supposedly and the guy was great with notes and things to go over and talk about - but it might have been because he was anal-retentive engineer too, haha.

Dave, did you do MO with NASA or BMW?

My hat is off to you guys who race! Honestly! I couldn't imagine racing my car when I'm finally done with it (not that I ever could 'cuz I'm a shitty driver). I understand that that's the beauty of racing an E30, but you spend all that time and money on a car just to end up trading paint with someone or going BANG against a pile of tires or a guard rail. I will race vicariously through you brave lads so keep posting your vids.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Dave, Robert and I are not racing (right?) - at least I know I'm not. Whole point of a Driver's School is to give the faster drivers a point by, and learn your best line and braking points. Racing is not condoned at HPDE's, and you'll quickly get the boot if you think you're racing.

Evidently the intent of my post was lost, due in no small part to my ignorance. I apologize. I meant to compliment those here who race. Ooops, I mean drive their cars really, really fast around a track while someone holds a stopwatch.

I meant no disrespect or insult.

I should have said that I envy you guys. I cant use any smaller words than that. Unless "envy" throws you as well.

                Again, please accept my apologies,

                kr

P.S. Is "race" a dirty word or something?

                  Sean,

I am planning to get my COmp license with NASA this upcoming season. Thus far, I have not been going W2W.

And kr, driving schools/DEs/track days are not timed events. Have a look at the sticky thread in this section. And I encourage you to consider attending one.

No, I think they were just letting you know that there is a distinct difference between tracking a car and racing a car. (race cars are usually much, much uglier)

Yay, I would never have myself timed at Putnam to know how fast I weres going...

kroberts, we are not racing, we're just being fruits in DEs. I'll try to get into TT soon enough which is like racing then who knows. SpecE30 if that so much is my course. All I know is I am in no condition to drive at the moment, and should go to bed.

I had an instructor grab and steer my car at Thunderhill. Holy shit did that piss me off/make me nervous. I ended up spinning out and was glad for it just to get the fucker out of my car. Never again will I allow an instructor to touch my steering wheel. I don't even know why you'd do it in the first place.
If you can't communicate an idea to someone, that will never be a good driver imo.

Yeah, if an instructor did that to me, I'd be pitting at the next opportunity and seeking out the Chief Instructor.

OHH, by no means, non-taken! It was just a friendly correction. :)

I'm a big person for making sure racing it used when appropriate. I don't even like it when people say autocross is racing...because racing to me is when you're on someone's ass right before the turn, and you enter early to pass and your rear end sldies just enough to tap him. THATS racing. Autocrossing is NOT racing is my book. And DE's are definitely not. But, again, it's a common mistake. I have to correct people when they say, "OHH YOU RACE YOUR CAR?!!" LOL

If an instructor grabbed my wheel, I'd do the same as Dave - exit to hot pits and talk to chief instructor...that's just dangerous!
