yeah, for the most part the 318is ends up in the same SCCA classes as the 325i.. and sorry to say, but 50lbs less weight from the motor isn't going to make up for 30 less hp/tq to the tires.

with some weight reduction and a couple mods to the 318 it will run evenly, assuming the 325 is left alone that is

But now i am going to have to be in SM due to the S50 that will be going in...
I am putting an S52 into my e30. I think the car is going to be extremely hard to drive in an auto x. Has anyone driven their S50/52 in an auto x?

I run my 318is up against some of the best DSP guys around. Their cars are well beyond mine in development and i simply cannot catch them at the moment.

However, there is one local guy that has a similar set up to my 318is on his 87 325is. About half way through the season i caught up to his times and beat him on more than one occasion. So in that respect they are not too far off from one another.

For next season im changing around a few things and hopefully my times will be a little bit closer to the front runners in DSP, but it wont matter as im switching to SM.

Ben Carufel had a video up a while back of his S50 car running auto-x.

50lbs? My car has a 250lb advantage over my competition. The motor isnt the only part that's lighter. And yes, it completely makes up for it. :)

sure, assuming the guy with the 325i doesn't strip his car down - in which case, both cars would be equal weight only one would have more power.

...and what keeps me from stripping down my car? I dont see your logic.

There isnt anything different from a 'bare bones' 325is chassis and 318is chassis. I think this is what he is getting at.

                      exactly

I'm not saying I wouldn't enjoy autox'ing a 318is, but it will be harder to keep up with a similarily prepared 325i and a good driver. it's possible that you are a better driver in a 318is and beat lots of 325i's, but that doesn't mean you wouldn't be faster with more power.

actually I'd like to buy a nice 318is by the end of the year, only I will keep it a mostly stock DD and enjoy ~30mpg and low maintenance. I'll use the ix to get my ass kicked by turbo miatas :p

I see your point, however, the motor, trans, diff, and in my case sunroof (or lack thereof) will always be lighter. And that's got to be at least 150lbs

I have no problem with 325i's. I think they are great cars and very fun to drive but I hate to see the 318is discounted as an economy car with less potential. In my experience the 318is is quite capable of keeping up with or beating a similarly prepared 325is.

And what are you legally going to remove from the 318 to make it "even"?

And yes, it looked like a complete handfull and could barely put the power down.

Lol, probly some of both. It killed me when he was bouncing off the rev limiter for 3 seconds going down that straight. I know rev limiters are there to protect the motor, but that car is too nice to beat on like that.
