v710s in 225 50 15 arrived today... for some reason the very first thing ups driver said was "what are you doing?" I chatted with him for a bit, thinking maybe he is into autox or hpde but he didn't know anything about tires...thought my car was a honda and that these tires were for sliding around...

hah, yeah - I love taking my hoosiers to get mounted at the local redneck tire shop. they always ask me what car I'm putting them on. and then give me strange looks when I point to the gray 4 door sedan in the parking lot.

        Would have told R888s.

My uncle was running 710s on his '03 Cobra for most of the year, just did his last track day with the R888s. He was bubbling on like a school girl about them.

Said there were at least 4 different times the tires grip level kept him from spinning out after making a mistake.

One '03 Cobra owner I know, a friend of mine, doesn't like V710's, since he went through a set in 2 weekends at TWS. He just burned 'em up with the higher temps during the summer. The R888's should give more progressive breakaway than the V710's, with a lower overall grip threshold. That's probably why they were awesome at slightly-past-the-limit driving.

I don't know if there is less grip, he just told me he was putting down the fastest laps he ever has at Hallett in the 4-5 years he has been doing HPDEs.

Hm. Sam hated the V710's compared to other R's he used, like RA-1's. The RA-1 and R888's have a much less aggressive compound, but are much more stable at and past thier limit of adhesion. I run RA-1 scrubs all the time and I love how they break away, compared to Hoosiers and the like. Maybe it makes him more confident in the car.

It's really hard to tell without data aq.

I picked the V710s as the car will mostly be driven in AutoX, and about 1-2 times a year in hpde at thunderhill. So I wanted a tire geared more towards autocross vs. track.

'03 Cobras also make a ton more power and weigh in at nearly 2 tons. They are much harder on tires. Different requirements.

Yep, and there are tons of guys using v710s on there C5s and Z06s and loving it...so probably a lot has to do with driving style too.

Very true, his car weighs in around 3800 lbs and is putting 450HP 450lb-ft to the rear wheels.

                      Not exactly an E30!
