Rota quality

As you saw, wheel failure is'nt just a Rota thing. We don't know all the circumstances behind any of these failures. In the 20+ years that I've been in the wheel buisness, I've seen BBS RS's(TRX RS's were notorious) with cracked rim barrels, various OE wheels with KBA and Japanese MOT stampings bend or crack. Gotti wheels that crack in between each assembly bolt. The list goes on.

Cris, I'm curious; how many of the failures that you have mentioned were caused by impacts? It would appear the Rotas that are in the first post were not damaged by external forces, but by simply being used on track. I understand that a 500 HP car should use the best, but do you believe that the power of the engine caused the twisting of the wheel, or cornering and braking forces? I don't think a 500 HP Civic causes the same wheel loadings as a 500 HP Chevelle (for example).

I'm not attacking, and I have absolutely no stake in this-I'm just curious.

I don't know what part of my posts in this thread you are talking about, but if it is my comment about PaintPro21's failed group buy on S14.net then as a simple driver, I would have been scared by the lack on thinking put into moving the holes away, so close to the edge of the hub, to adapt a 4 x100 or 5 x 100, into a 5 x120. It is quite clear that the engineer who decided it would be okay must have had a brain fart. I don't imply that the whole production follows that trend, but I totally understand when PaintPro cancelled everything. I wouldn't have put such wheels on my car myself. That being said, there are some great wheels in the catalog, such as the Minilite-style 15" x 7" that many of my friends bought.

+1, i think you should buy quality equivalent to your needs, not your sense of cheapness.

You know as well as I do that structural design is very important in any casting.

Once you start to save weight, to a certain degree you're going to comprimise strength.

As for Rota screwing up the e30 m3 GB, I was'nt in on the conversation. All the wheels I've had done have been top notch. Just ask Paintpro.

Truth be told, Rota does have a place in the market, just like all the other southeast Asian wheel manufacturers. I think we as consumers just need to be smart about what we purchase. Think about it, a guy built a 500hp Civic. Why did'nt he buy a forged BBS, SSR or Work wheel?

I really don't think $ = quality with wheels (to an extent). Kosei's, the 949 wheels, Team Dynamics, etc... were all around the same price as Rota's.

QFT. Design, materials used & construction methods are what separate the good from the bad.

There is a reason they don't cost as much as the best shit ever.

The Rota's cost more then the new Tire Rack wheels that Jack helped get produced for us... does that mean they are shittier then Rota's? Same with D-Force that Bimmerworld sells?

My Mille Miglia's have been through hell... 8 years, 130k miles, potholes, smashed into curbes, a median at 50mph, etc... and they are still straight. But I've seen BBS's bend over one pothole.

Wheels are indeed selling on eBay as we speak. I was in the GB for the wheels, but after receiving such badly made prototype, we decided to cancel the GB.

I was the one who ordered the 15x8 wheels that were no good. I posted about them on this board as well.

I don't know if they were two different offsets, but the wheels from the OP bowed outward as well, looks like just taking corners was raping the wheels.

is it the power or braking thats doing the damage? surely the brakes would apply a greater force than the drivetrain?

I thought those were TR wheels but after zooming in on the center cap I think they are actually Team Dynamic wheels (based on the "Dynamic" on the center cap). Scary stuff!

Same here, I was like "OHHH NOOO" for a second but they didn't look like TRM wheels :)
