The shop that straightens my OEMs says that BMW went for softer wheels that bend rather than crack. If I was a wheel designer I'd probably make them like BMW with better fracture toughness. Stiffer material is more brittle and the broken spokes display the negatives of leaning too far to that side. -

I have a set of Rotas and a set of D Forces--the Rotas are straight and the D-Forces are bent to hell.Leave a comment:

Reviving this thread!
Was considering Slipstream 16x8 et20...running with 225 tires, maybe R-compound at a certain point. The Slipstream looks stronger than some other design, at least from the one that Lee posted... However, I'm still reconsidering my choice... Should I?Leave a comment:

ok.. :roll:so not to rain on the rota hating parade but that sure looks like a photoshop to me. I can not believe a wheel would bend that far before it snapped.
I had rotas on my last car and never had a problem, yes I know they are no BBS's but if you look on Google images I guarantee you you can find every brand of wheel broken.

Agreed,
the e30 m3 wheel problem was from attempting to adapt a wheel that can't technically be adapted, so problems were going to happen for sure no matter what company would have made them. I'm just sad to see they went ahead with it when they shouldn't have. Poor communication, assumptions by the engineers, who knows what's really the cause. Tons of people track on Rota wheels and the ones that are made exactly as originally designed and tested should function well. And yes all sorts of wheels have failures. I bet a lot of the Rota pics we see of all the spokes shearing are not just breaking mid driving, but are breaking once the car goes off track or something like that. Which is like saying that one aftermarket body kit gets less damage in a car accident then another. Not an excuse for that style failure, but we don't question oem wheel failure when we see a totalled car either.
Although I have my personal reasons to be upset with them, they still have many wheels that do their job just fine for what they were originally designed for. There aren't a lot of companies out there willing to make mold changes and produce small volumes of custom wheels/colors.
C'mon Lee!
You know as well as I do that structural design is very important in any casting.
Once you start to save weight, to a certain degree you're going to comprimise strength.
As you saw, wheel failure is'nt just a Rota thing. We don't know all the circumstances behind any of these failures. In the 20+ years that I've been in the wheel buisness, I've seen BBS RS's(TRX RS's were notorious) with cracked rim barrels, various OE wheels with KBA and Japanese MOT stampings bend or crack. Gotti wheels that crack in between each assembly bolt. The list goes on.
As for Rota screwing up the e30 m3 GB, I was'nt in on the conversation. All the wheels I've had done have been top notch. Just ask Paintpro.
Truth be told, Rota does have a place in the market, just like all the other southeast Asian wheel manufacturers. I think we as consumers just need to be smart about what we purchase. Think about it, a guy built a 500hp Civic. Why did'nt he buy a forged BBS, SSR or Work wheel?

Azenis apparently don't work well on leaves. Sideways drift into a curb @55mph. To a dead stop. I was sore for a week, and car had bent front/rear subframes. I keep the wheel as a reminder not to do stupid shit like that anymore.Leave a comment:

I **think** I can get NT-01's for $100 each, so I am prolly going with those. And the TR's whenever they become available... I don't have the cash for those anyway, so TR can take thier time ;)
Snaps! What happened to the ones on the Prelude?Leave a comment:
