    Tow hook: questions....

A couple of questions...this is in reference to an 89 325is in a HDPE if it matters:

    (1) Should you install a hook before the event? Or do you wait until you run off the track to install it?

    (2) Should you install one in the front AND the rear?

    (3) And if so, do the rules allow you use the stock ones or do you need to get the fancy fold-down style ones?

for HPDE, the stock one is fine in the front stock location and you will most definitely want to install it in the paddock before you go out. The rear in an e30 has a tow hook.

Well I kept reading about the fact that they cant protrude beyond the bumper hence the hinge. i guess that is not true in hpde.

I wasnt trying to take shots at you, I was actually trying to reference that to the "honda" ricer crowd that install tow hooks just for looks. And those two hooks do look really good, i'd rock one:)

Check the rules with the club you run with. Some do, some don't.

Slice a slit in a tennis ball and cover it while you're in the pits so nobody loses a shin. Pop it off for when you go out on track. If you forget to take the ball off, they do generally stay on at speeds up to 130 from my experience...

good tip but more useful for the big red fixed ones i think. the stock one doesn't stick out so far but better safe than sorry i guess. would be funny & scary to see a tennis ball come flying down the straightaway :)

LOL, I just got an image in my head of a tennis ball falling off a vette or something and passing me on a straightaway.

How do those red BMW tow straps attach to the bumper shocks on early model cars? I never could figure that out...

I wrapped mine around the stock tow hook behind the bumper and it comes out underneath the diving board.

I damn near broke my knee on my friends 335 yesterday as he left the factory one screwed in on the front of his car all day. the e30 m3 has a tow hook under a cover in the front as well. does the regular e30 not have a permanent front tow hook as well?
