Sounds a little strange to me. First off, not sure how this would happen to the valve cover. Second, this should not alter its ability to seal.

Why does it need a head gasket, what happened?

Noticed poor gas mileage, checked my spark plugs saw there were full of crap, looked in to coolant tank and saw brown, noticed excess oil consumption with my last oil change I did on sunday and tonight I had a "limp modish" start up leaving a eatery till the engine got warm when it decided to act like normal...Short of doing a compression test I am pretty sure the HG is going out but not blown yet.

The head and gasket only have 10k at most. Almost guaranteed not to be the problem.

Issue is more likely the rings wearing out. What oil do you run?

Change your plugs and do a coolant flush.
